San Mateo county- We have to vote out TOM LANTOS !
Edited on Fri Feb-27-04 01:58 AM by BEFOREATHOUGHT
Tom Lantos, supported the Iraq war, Patriot act and no child left behind. In a resent debate Lantos reinforced his support for the war and the patriot act.

I’m an Independent voter, who will take a Democratic ballot to vote this man out. He does not represent the constituents of our San Mateo County.

Lantos faces his Democratic challengers in Pacifica

<snips>
Lantos, who has been representing the 12th Congressional District since 1980, is seen pretty much as a liberal Democrat on everything except his views on the Iraq war and the Patriot Act, both of which he supported.

His challengers, both attorneys, have made these two issues the key to their political efforts, hoping to win over the perceived "anti-war" Democratic voter. Ro Khanna is making his first foray into politics while Pacifica resident Maad Abu-Ghazalah ran against Lantos two years ago as a Libertarian.

(The California Civil Rights Alliance arranged for all the 12th Congressional District candidates to attend a meeting with the theme of abolishing the Patriot Act Tuesday night in Pacifica, but Lantos declined to attend.

3. Lantos tried to get himself out of the debates
After lots of public pressure, he finally agreed to do it 4 DAYS BEFORE THE PRIMARY ELECTION!!!

4. I'm hesitant to oppose him.
He's been good on so many issues. But on foreign policy, the war against Iraq and other areas, he is clearly not aligned with his district, and will be replaced one day by a quite different representative regarding these issues.

8. Lantos does a lot of good things: Here's one:
http://www.house.gov/lantos/caucus/caucuswebpage.htm

co-chair of the Congresional Human Rights Caucus which doies a lot of great things.

I agree that he is hawkish on Israel (he is a Holocaust survivor rescued by Raoul Wallenburg in Hungary) and Iraq (which is the Israeli position - Likud) - but his experience as a threatened Jew during the Nazi era gives him a very humane perspective on most human rights issues.

This is a tough call for me in many ways.

He is great on many issues.
