Dean: Nominee Must Cast Bush As Ideologue
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=694&ncid=703&e=3&u=/ap/20040227/ap_on_el_pr/dean

WASHINGTON - Howard Dean (news - web sites), who failed to win a single Democratic primary contest before exiting the presidential race, says the only way his party can defeat President Bush (news - web sites) is to stand strong for its principles and paint the Republican as a radical ideologue.

The former Vermont governor said the Democratic Party should "not paper over its differences with the most radical administration in our lifetime," according to remarks prepared for delivery Thursday to supporters in New Haven, Conn.

"In order to win, the Democratic Party must aggressively expose the ways in which George W. Bush's policies benefit the privileged and the most extreme ideologues," said Dean, who plans to start a political organization that will promote grass-roots democracy and support candidates who favor progressive policies such as universal health care.

Dean plans to announce details about the organization March 18.

1. Agreed plus
the emphasis must be on his policies leading to their losing their jobs and drive home the dif between Christian fundie and Christian (w/o using those terms, of course).

2. It's not gonna take a whole lot of paint.
A dry MagickMarker ought to be enough.

3. ...without coming off as an ideolouge oneself, hopefully.
Because in a battle between two ideolouges, the defender wins ties.

It's not so much what you say as how you say it.

4. huh?
"Because in a battle between two ideolouges, the defender wins ties."

where do you get that from?

two ideologues (or two people who offer distinct, clear positions) would provide a real choice and encourage turnout. it would also get the Dem message out in a world full of repug media.

The ideologue with the better message wins.

7. In an otherwise fair contest, maybe...
... but this is not going to be a fair contest. The Dem nominee is going to have to defend themselves twice as much as Bush will, and if that person comes off as putting ideology before pragmatism he will not stand a chance.

5. Why does the media still insist on marginalizing Dean?
I don't see the relevance of including this line: "who failed to win a single Democratic primary contest before exiting the presidential race" in this article when quoting Dean. That is not relevant, unless the author is intentionally trying to invalidate Dean's comments in the mind of the reader.

6. Dean is still politically dangerous, in the long term, to big media. (n/t)
