Yeah, I'd hate for a potential Democratic nominee to actually have his OWN goddam opinion about anything, whether or not I agree with him.

2. I 'cared' 8 years ago when the right pushed this issue that last time |
|
I do believe that two consenting adults should be able to get married. BUT this is not the time to deal with this issue and the right just is using it as a scare tactic.

7. As if I needed more proof |
|
that my skin is just too thin for the GD2004 forum. One comment and I'm outta here; I will not be replying to responses so enjoy yourselves:
IF NOT NOW, WHEN? THIS IS OUR LIVES, NOT SOME DIVERSION OR SCARE TACTIC. That it has popped up now, in the middle of this presidential campaign, is over and done. It can't be changed. It is here now and so the time is here and now to take the initiative, keep pushing, and make GLBT equality a reality. Finally.
I have no doubt that most everyone here supports GLBT equality. But to hear my fellow progressive liberals refer to this clear matter of equal civil rights as a scare tactic is, quite frankly, disgusting.
(And to pre-empt anyone's McCarthy-like concerns: jesus christ, YES, if Kerry's the nominee I will vote for him.)

3. Not outraged, but jeez, Kerry, look around |
|
Edited on Sat Feb-28-04 11:59 AM by rucky
Thousands of couples are tying the knot. Mayors are revolting. Courts are Doing Their Job (!). And all this is happening DESPITE Bush & Asscroft's "iron fist" rule.
This is a BIG WIN for our side! If you can't see the power in this movement, you're missing out on a big opportunity for real change & enthusistic support. Maybe he's cheering from the sidelines, I dunno. It would be nice to see more support, but Kerry's been playing this election a certain way & it's working for him, so I guess we just have to understand.
We can do this stuff without NATIONAL leaders. This is a LOCAL movement, and our leaders close to home are being bold because there is less at stake. This is how we fight the BFEE. They can't stop our municipalities without sending in the national guard. Fuck national politics. The REAL progressive power's in LOCAL politics.
Thanks Gavin Newsome!
edit: To answer your question, Love makes a family. I didn't need a politician to tell me that.

4. I Am Outraged By Gay People |
|
Well, not really. But I am kinda annoyed by their (meaning those forcing the issue, not all gays) impeccably bad sense of timing.
Kerry has proven himself a stalwart defender of gay rights - more so than any President in history. Should he get elected, he could fundamentally re-shape the Supreme Court.
By pushing this into an unpopular culture war during an election year, these gay activists are screwing up their own agenda. If they demonstrated a few months of patience, it would serve them well.

9. The Sad Fact is that 60% Plus of Americans Oppose Gay Marriage |
|
That fact is not going to change any time soon. It also seems likely that the marriages in California will be ultimately thrown out by the California courts, because of the anti-gay marriage law that was passed several years ago. The California Supreme Court only denied review for now but did order the parties to brief the issue. Massachusetts may well amend its constitution too. And New York's governor is vowing to nullify the NY marraiages. Thus, the gay marriages that are occurring seem unlikely to stand.

10. The FACT is that those OUTRAGED with Kerry's position were NOT |
|
concerned about the issue of gay marriage 2 years ago, or even last year. The FACTS do NOT bear out all of this SUDDEN CONCERN with the gay marriage issue, UNTIL Bush MADE it a wedge issue in this election.
:D
Even then, those most OUTRAGED with Kerry's position on gay marriage APPEAR to be NON-gay DEAN supporters.
Hmmmmmm.

I know, that I am a gay Dean supporter who is outraged and several other Dean supporters who are outraged are also gay. BTW if white posters were outraged over an issue about civil rights would you find that similarly bizarre?
And I have the cancelled checks to prove I cared about this issue long before it was raised here.

18. I'm a "non gay Dean supporter" outraged with many of Waffleboy's positions |
|
Of course those change several times a day, as his position on gay marriage has, but his miserable failure in opposing the other miserable failure in general is enough of an outrage.
As for the sickness in this country which demands my gay & lesbian friends and family be treated like second class citizens, you're goddamn right that's an outrage. Can't blame Senator Waffles for creating that one though.
Just for perpetuating it.

12. I've cared about this issue for nearly 10 years... |
|
That's nearly half my life, since I'm 23.
Every since the Hawaii SC ruled gay couples were entitled to the same benefits, I've cared. And that was before I came out!

15. You are the exception. |
|
You are gay and have a reason to be concerned about the issue. My contention is that those who are suddenly most outraged by Kerry' position on gay marriage are straight and Dean supporters who always hated kerry to begin with and never gave a shit ABOUT THIS ISSUE BEFORE Bush made it an issue.

Throwing the dogs a bone ain't good enough though. Civil Unions will not ensure equality under the law, and Kerry knows that.

20. My sister-in-law is lesbian. |
|
My closest friend from grade school is gay.
Yeah, this IS an issue for me. I wouldn't have ramrodded it to the forefront, except the supposed democratic frontrunner came out and said he was against gay marriage. That is fundamentally wrong. It isn't just a question of gay rights. It's a question of how people, all people, should be treated. And pardon the hell out of me, but Kerry is on the wrong side of this.

Dean and Edwards both oppose anti-gay constitutional amendments. Kerry supports an anti-gay amendment if it's on the state level. That's an important difference you keep glossing over.

Kerry was a mere junior senator. In 8 months he may be President. The effect of his convictions will expand from parochial to national. I don't see where there's any sort of lapse in consistency from those who were diffident then and exercised now.
Edit: spelling correction

It's forced Kerry to take the position he has.

It is Bush that forced this issue to the forefront, not leftist gay activists.
Jesus Christ. This is about civil rights for human beings. Timing be damned. The Democratic Party needs to be behind this issue 100%
