Anyone else not have gay marriage as one of their top issues? |
|
I confess, maybe a bit politically incorrect here, but I don't have gay marriage as one of my top issues. In fact, it isn't even on the list.
I am much more concerned with jobs, state of economy, and health care. As well as international relations with allied countries. Bush has ruined the US reputation with his flawed go it alone approach and with us or against us foreign policy. Aren't these more important issues to the nation as a whole? Or am I out of step with the majority on this one.

Not even in the top 15, truth to tell. I'm more concerned about a proposal to ban fox from producing reality shows; in principle I support it, but woudln't it be better to ban all of them? Bryant Check it out --> http://politicalcomment.blogspot.com

Has successfully changed the focus from Bush's failures since we are all talking about gay marriage now.
I'm more concerned with Bush packing the courts with right-wing hacks that will ensure that gays never have equal rights.

5. Lots of people are opposed to Equal Protection under the law |
|
for everyone, but not everyone agrees on which groups should be exempt from it.
The Democratic front runners both favor having it be an opt-in choice for states.
The idea has a lot of business-friendly applications, but there might be some political wade-through on getting the 14th Amendment repealed, and then of course, there are the social costs.

7. Strategically, the culture wars hurt the Dems |
|
which is why Bush started this.
We need to get back to our winning issues, jobs, economy, healthcare, taking care of vets, middle class losing ground, etc.
And the sooner, the better!

That said, it would be strategically stupid for a Dem candidate to wholeheartedly support gay marriage.
But of course, that is the RIGHT thing to do.

18. It's my top issue, in a way. |
|
I vote purely on Supreme Court nominees. It's a great catch-all as far as issues are concerned (since the Court touches so many different issues), and the nominees get to serve for decades apiece.. The president who nominates a good nominee is earning my vote over and over again in the votes that his justices are casting.
Hell, Nixon is still haunting this country through the actions of his beloved Rehnquist..

Its a top issue for me becuase im gay and in a relationship.
I can understand this not being a big deal for straight people though.

Waverly_Hills_Hiker - and I'm straight. Sadly, I've been cursed with a social conscience about civil rights issues since I was a child, watching tv and seeing the Bull Connors of the world spraying black people with fire hoses.
It's an issue for me, because women have not achieved parity by any means in this country - and I'm tired of being a pariah - tired of seeing my gay friends treated as pariahs.
It's an issue because I love some folks who are gay.
Civil rights issues are very high on my list of priorities. They used to be important to the Democratic Party.

22. Gays and lesbians provide |
|
between 7 and 12 percent of Democratic votes. In 2000, gays were 5% of the electorate, voted 70% for Gore. That is 3.5% with Gore getting just under 50% total. That is 7%, and that is only openly gay voters. The true total is likely to be quite a bit more. Tell me again why those voters should care what you think when our basic rights are not even on your list.
