Folks this is what we are dealing with.
I had a co-worker look me square in the face and tell me that Democrats cannot be Christians.

I kid you not.

I have been a Democrat my entire adult life and a Christian since I was ten years old.

Of course I let this person have it on various issues regarding Democratic stances supportive of the poor and needy versus Republican stances that make it harder for Americans to survive.

I hope I made an impact, but who knows.

1. Given the response on DU every time Obama mentions his faith, I would say that some here agree.

3. Jesus favored corporate tax cuts and warmongering
Don't you remember that part in the Bible?

It's scary how easily people can be brain-washed to vote against not only their own self interests, but their own beliefs.

4. you think that;'s bad?
Hold your stomach and check out http://www.fstdt.com (Fundies Say the Darnedest Things), and look at the "Top 100" link; a collection of posts from various extremist Christian websites, forums and such.

5. People use the word "Christian" in a funny way
We had people in our small home town who differentiated between Christians and Catholics. Yikes!

I think that you can act in a spiritual, kind way without referring to God and church all the time, but that's just me. I actually did have a civilized conversation with an Obama fundraiser who called some time ago (probably in the summer). I politely said that I wished Obama wouldn't refer to religion so much. The caller got a (tiny bit) belligerant and said, "but that's what people want!" To which I said, "yes, but you're asking for MY support". So that was that and I said if Obama is the candidate I would certainly support him and we agreed to disagree in a polite manner.

Things seem to have degraded a bit.

6. I've been hearin that crap for over a decade...
they were rabid down here during the Cinton administration... anti-choice, anti-gay... they're nutso... just flat-out nutso.

And in my experience the vast majority don't respond to logic AT ALL. Nor do they seem to have actually read the bible.

7. Forgot to say this .............................
My oldest grandchild has Down Syndrome.

I looked this co-worker square in the face and asked: "Do you think it would be right to cut off Social Security payments to my darling Conner?"

That is what Republicans would like to do. They don't want to take care of the helpless and needy.

She shut her mouth up quick.

8. When our Democrats say they're Christians
they get beat to hell for it, so it's going to be tough to change anyone's mind.

Christianity is Democratic.

11. Has this touched anyone else like it has touched me?
Because of my grandson's Down Syndrome, I take this very personally.

Perhaps more than ever before I have recognized the effect of federal government financial policies for the disadvantaged, disabled, and needy.

I look in Conner's eyes and I cannot imagine not wanting to help him.

12. I am sorry you face so many challenges to help your son
I am also sorry that the media refuses to report on the issues. Every American should be demanding Conyers Single Payer Health Care Bill, but only one candidate endorses it, Kucinich.

Kucinich, a former altar boy, embodies more Christian values in his little finger than any of the Republican candidates do in their entire bodies.

Remember, Blessed are the Peacemakers?

Who is the ultimate peacemaker?

Buy a copy of The Courage to Survive, by Dennis Kucinich, read it and pass it on to anyone who might question that progressives have Christian values.

13. I would look them right in the face and tell them Jesus was a Liberal
You cannot reconcile the teachings of Jesus Christ with the doctrines of right wing Republicans. They are diametrically opposed to one another.

14. I just say, "I can't imagine how a Christian would not...
be a Democrat." And leave it at that.

Further discussion with some people is fruitless.

15. "fruitless" but somehow I cannot give up
especially because I have my grandson to consider and they know me and they know my Conner.

Conner is the light of my life.

He deserves every penny he can get from the government.

Everyone in my family for generations has been taxed and never taken a dime. Conner deserves help.
