I'm in S.C. and just received a phone call from The Clintons' campaign. |
|
Edited on Fri Jan-25-08 07:42 PM by hiaasenrocks
The caller urged me to support The Clintons in tomorrow's election. I told her that I had decided upon another candidate and she asked me if it was because of any particular issue. I told her that there were several issues and asked her, as a volunteer for The Clintons, if she could take a minute or two to explain to me how The Clintons would end the war in Iraq when Hillary has said that she would keep troops in Iraq to train Iraqis, guard embassies and fight terrorists. (That's basically what "the war" is right now.)
The caller did not have an answer to that, so I asked, "Why are you voting for The Clintons?"
And...click! She hung up.
Great work!

There's a lot of that going around.
I give the caller all the credit.

12. And worst of all she WILL FIRE HOWARD DEAN on her way to consolidating power |
|
And that will be the end of the 50 state strategy that made her candidacy possible.

|
Howard Dean trashed the delegates from two elections based on bullshit about moving up primary dates. How very "democratic" !

2. Obama callers are instructed to politely end the call when someone says they support someone else. |
|
Perhaps the Clinton canvasser ought to have done the same!

And I've never seen a campaign assign any cold-calling tasks to people who weren't conversant on the major issues or at least given a cheat sheet with short paragraphs. This caller didn't even have a canned response to read.

5. That's the general rule of thumb |

chances are you could contact several more definite supporters in that five minutes you spend arguing than you could trying to convince a strong supporter of the other candidate.

9. LOL. So it takes a Rhodes Scholar to be able to address one of the |
|
biggest issues of the campaign?
I've worked phone banks before, starting in 1988 for Governor Dukakis, I've never worked in a campaign that put people on cold-calling lists without quick notes on the major issues.

28. I worked the phone bank in our last congress. contest, we were |
|
not given any sheet to answer those types of questions. We asked do you need a ride, do you know your voting location, etc. We were not to answer for the candidate. Just be friendly and supportive.

40. Years ago, I took a temp job |
|
doing GOTV calls for a certain local candidate. I was very young, just out on my own, desperate for money (I actually had to jump the subway turnstile after my first day of work because I didn't have the fare to get home.) The candidate was a horrible Repub sleazebag who I utterly despised, but I had to suck it up and call the people on the list. To this day, I still feel dirty when I think about it.
Anyway, a lot of the people I called actually hated the candidate as much as I did, and would start screaming and swearing at me, and I wanted to say, "I'm with you! He's horrible! Please understand! I don't want to be doing this!" but I couldn't.
It was even worse, though, when people would start gushing about the candidate, saying, "Isn't he wonderful! He's going to get rid of all those filthy animals doing drugs in the streets! I can't wait until he wins," expecting me to agree with them. I would usually just mumble something noncommittal and get off the phone as quickly as possible.
Thankfully, I found a better job a few days later. But I just wanted to say that you never really know exactly the situation or motivation of the person calling you. I try to be nice, even if I disagree with them... unless they get out of line, in which case I rip 'em a new asshole. ;)

So you're voting for Obama because you're in favor of dehumanizing anyone whose opinion differs from yours and calling names at every opportunity? That's certainly an excellent reason.

That's pretty standard. So your cleverness didn't actually amount to much, dear. I'm sure there were MANY things she wanted to say to you. She just wasn't allowed.

There are usually canned answers, short and nothing more than soundbites.
She didn't even have that. I guess I should expect as much from The Clintons' campaign.

I don't think I would consider one caller representative of the whole Clinton campaign. There are many young people that aren't versed in everything Hillary, Barrack, or John have stated in there plans for america.
I gave a call out to Barrack campaign headquarters and a person manning the phones answered. I asked a question and he said, I'm not sure, I'll let you speak to someone else that can help you.
I never really thought anything of it. You would think a person manning the phones at the campaign headquarters would be versed on Barracks plans but he wasn't. He was probably a youngin that wanted to get involved in the political process and voluntered for phone duty.
I think there are probably many folks in all the candidates campaign that are not well versed in there plans.

In fact, her call didn't surprise me. Supporters of The Clintons here on DU don't answer the question, either. Not surprising, considering The Clintons' tendency to take multiple sides of this issue (and others).

Pays minimum wage, has lousy hours, they only get so much training and they get rated on how much time they spend with each call.
I know they are working for a living so I just give them a simple "no thank you" and disconnect. It's easy. It's polite. Sometimes you feel better if you do the nice thing.
