I just heard Edwards' speech and he didn't say why he's leaving the race. |
|
I hope he says something sometime soon. I've had it up to here with all the bullshit speculation.

2. I'm fine with it. He pledged his continued commitment - what that means in his future efforts |
|
is more the story, imho. I'll be interested to see what he decides to do down the road.

3. He did say he was "stepping aside to let history take its course". |
|
Sounds like he was told to get out of the way of a black guy or a woman. I want my money back. I am very hurt.

14. With McCain advancing, |
|
it could be Edwards realized Dems were going to lose the GE, no matter how much he tried to stop it.

4. He read from a script... |

...and it was hard for him to get out the first few sentences, as I recall. It all strikes me as very strange.

16. I seriously doubt that |

Why would he want to waste precious time away from his family to help someone who would end up screwing him over in the end?

9. It was his decision. Nobody else's. He made it of his own free will. |
|
He recognized the reality of the situation with regard to the media coverage, and decided to let Democrats make up their own minds about who would be the nominee, rather than him being "kingmaker". It was the right thing to do.
"The serenity to accept those things that I can't change... the courage to change what I can... and the wisdom to know the difference."
In this instance John showed himself to be a wise man. Regardless of whatever anyone else will say about him.

10. I was looking for an explanation, too. He's on record |
|
as having said he was in this thing for the long haul. He could have, at the very least, played kingmaker at the convention. I'm trying to make sense of it, but not having any luck.

11. See my above post re: "kingmaker" |
|
I think when he said he was in it for the long haul that is what he felt. But people do change their minds based on events, (except George W. Bush of course). There could have been personal reasons as well which he did not want to talk about right now. Time will tell.

13. Yes, and I think he does owe it to those who supported him and signed on with him |
|
to explain, however briefly, what he based his decision on. And I'm hoping that he does it soon. Maybe he wasn't ready, emotionally, to do it today; but he does need to explain why he changed his mind about going all the way to the convention, as he promised us he would.

15. I think those who gave of their time and money are |

owed that for sure. Edwards is a pretty straight up guy. I'm sure we haven't heard the last of this.

17. If it had something to do with Elizabeth's health, you'll be waiting a long time |
|
'cause he would never blame it on her or give that as an explanation. Even if it was true. I'm sure there were many different factors but I don't think he owes us more of an explanation than he's already given. And I say that as someone who donated quite a bit to him.

20. I wouldn't expect him to "blame" his decision on his |
|
wife's health. If that was part of the reason, he should, by all means quit the campaign.
This was all so sudden, though, and in spite of his statements that he was taking this fight all the way to the convention. I'd just like to know why he changed his mind.

22. So would I. Not to be critical of him in any way, just to be able to put it to rest because one of |
|
the things that made me hesitate to hang my hat on that peg was the fear that he might drop out of the race. So when he said he was going straight through to the convention, that allowed me to go full steam ahead for him, without doubts.
I wish he had been able to carry it out and I'm sure he would have liked to, if circumstances hadn't made it impossible.

21. Under the circumstances, it seems to me there can be only one reason: |
|

They got a medical report about Elizabeth's health. I hope and pray it's not too serious.
Edwards has had a very heavy campaign schedule going every day this past week. His campaign was upbeat about the record number of contributions. Just yesterday I got an e-mail from them rejoicing about how his campaign had received more in donations during the past month than it received during the entire preceding quarter.
Edwards also reassured his followers right up to the moment of his decision to quit that he was going to stay in all the way to the convention no matter what. He's a man of his word and I believe him.
If, like Giuliani, he was dropping out for political reasons, he would have said so.
But no. He was silent as to why. That's not like him. Only one thing could explain it: the reason is personal and private, and he wants to keep it that way. It's Elizabeth. And if that's what's behind it, I admire him for his silence.
