An Obama supporters vile Hillary email smear

My colleague Ben Adler picked up on a viral e-mail circulating in the African-American community that shares the tone and the focus on the candidates' youth with some of the viral anti-Obama smears. The e-mail is a sign of the kind of sub-rosa anger at the Clintons among Obama supporters that may keep building despite the campaigns' on-and-off decisions to tamp it down.

Adler e-mails:

One version of the e-mail, authored by a musician named Greg Jones, is posted on Jones’ page on the Obama campaign’s mybarackobama.com social networking site and on the website blacks4barack.homestead.com, which appears to be run by Jones.

The e-mail’s subject line is “The truth about Hillary Clinton.” It attacks Clinton for having allegedly opposed (as a teenager) the Civil Rights Act of 1964, using a March 12, 2007, column by Robert Novak as its primary source.

The e-mail argues that because Clinton was a “Goldwater Girl,” she must have opposed the Civil Rights Act, as Goldwater did.

(Greg Sargent differs pretty convincingly with the Novak column's argument here.)

The e-mail also uses some fairly inflammatory language, calling Clinton supporters such as BET Founder Bob Johnson and Magic Johnson “'Token Negroes.'”

Probably the same people who have done the other ones. Go to Free Republic and do a search on Obama and Muslim, and you'll find out where most of THAT particular rumor is coming from. The point in all of this is to smear the candidate, and badly, and if there's a backlash it'll be blamed on, for example, Hillary or vice versa. And the internet grants just enough anonymity for it to be an effective contrivance.

Go to Free Republic and search for Obama Muslim or Obama madrassa. It might do you some good to find out where these things really originate rather than instinctively blaming Clinton.
