An example of a calculating political mind (re: HRC)
Edited on Fri Feb-01-08 12:13 AM by democrat2thecore
To me, this says something about a person. Even her name changes and blows to the political winds

1978: Bill Clinton wins election, at 32, to become Governor of Arkansas. The new First Lady of Arkansas makes it known she is, "Hillary Rodham" - "just as it's always been". She never legally took Bill's name.

1980: Bill Clinton loses re-election as Governor to Republican Bill White. Many attributed the loss to "Hillary Rodham" and the whole perception thing.

1982: Bill Clinton is elected - again - as Governor of Arkansas. This time, Hillary campaigned as "Mrs. Bill Clinton." No kidding!

1982: Mrs. Bill Clinton became known as "Hillary Rodham-Clinton."

1983-1992: She is known to her staff, and she uses, Hillary Rodham-Clinton

1993: Lisa Caputo, HRC's Press Secretary in the White House says, "Her preferred name is Hillary Rodham-Clinton"

2000: Hillary campaigns in New York for U.S. Senate as "Hillary" with "Hillary Rodham Clinton" used formally.

2007: Hillary announces for President on January 20th. She is using the "Hillary" logo, but this time: no "Rodham". We've all heard it, "This is Hillary Clinton and I approved this message." The Rodham is gone except for official Senate work. She campaigns exclusively as "Hillary Clinton."

Calculating. Very calculating.

An early 1993 story from the NYT on all this - two name changes back:

6. But in public life?
He's always been Barack Obama in public life. Gart Hart caught all kinds of HELL for shortening his name from "Gary Hartpence" to "Gary Hart" BEFORE he entered public life. This is all different than calculating moves as the political winds shift.

16. That hurt so good.
I have my issues with Hillary. Her name isn't one of them. I consider this one of those non issues that is not germane and has the stank of rightwing talking point on it.

9. An example of a lazy political mind (re: BHO)
Edited on Fri Feb-01-08 12:24 AM by smalll
It's 2008. The original Iraq war was 17 long years ago. This country fought and won a war against a nasty dictator-for-life, but left him in power. Don't you think the young, rising Obama, with his dreams of the presidency, would have taken the time after that to go down to the courthouse and get rid of his middle name? He couldn't be bothered.

We all know at this point about that church he is currently involved with. How long has he been a communicant there? That would have given him another opening to change his middle name, from a generic Arab Muslim name to a more "Christian" one, almost as a kind of ceremony of committment to his Christian beliefs. There were problems with Saddam Hussein all through the Clinton years (1992-2000.) Why didn't he go down to the courthouse then and change his middle name? He couldn't be bothered. He probably told himself that he could slide into the Oval Office one day on his general wonderfulness despite it all. Lazy, lazy lazy!

(Of course, parking can get a bit tight around courthouses. Maybe he was worried about getting another parking ticket. )

11. Or maybe he respected his father - who also had that name.
To me, it showed he was more interested in his family history and legacy than in political points by changing his name.

21. If you see changing your name - for POLITICAL purposes - as no big deal...well..
Of course, I also thought the idea of the tiny flake from Cleveland as President was pretty ridiculous as well. So, we see things differently.

Talk about rude. But, typical of so much of the playground talk here at DU. Crass, profane, personal, so many uncivil people. I'm guessing - under 23?

Edited on Fri Feb-01-08 04:40 PM by democrat2thecore
Everyone knows AP stories run all over the country on radio/TV and newspapers. You find it on Fox and make it look like "my source"....that's nasty. Not very progressive.

Example, since you may not be smart enough to understand what the Associated Press is:
Here's the same story at ABC.

35. I don't blame her for this. Women have it rough. It's Hil's IWR vote that bugs me.
Women are held to a standard that men are n ot, and Hillary has had to negotiate that changing standard.

What matters to me is whether or not she is honest and trustworthy as a political officeholder and campaigner. I do not feel that she is, and that's why I support Obama as my primary candidate. Her last name means nothing to me.
