Do you think America is ready for Obama/Clinton or Clinton/Obama? |
|
My own thinking-it's taking a stretch for some people to elect either one, because it is not the "same old" choice offered(older white male), or that they've been conditioned to accept. Having both a man of color and a woman on the same ticket, either consciously or unconsciously may affect the votes of some.
I put it to you--am I just being pessimistic, or is this a valid concern in your opinion come time for the GE?

The type most likely to reject the idea of voting for a black person or woman, without giving serious condsideration to the candidate is the type of person who would not vote Democratic anyway. They're the 29-percenters.
Not that all Democrats are free of prejudice, but I think even those with conditioned or cultural feelings about it would be more open to giving it serious thought rather than blindly casting it aside, because liberals are more open to considering new information and ideas than conservatives are.

7. Exactly. If you're pursuing the vote of those who dismiss on that criteria, you're wasting your time |
|
You can't change either one into a white male, and those who think that's a bad thing will never vote Democratic.

nothing ever seen before. It would be unstoppable. I never would have believed it before but tonight it became obvious to me, together there isn't anything they couldn't get done.

The primary will just settle the order of precedence.
Did you see how Obama's body language changed when the topic was raised? He could have just come out and said, "we're in this together."
As for the historical perspective, this is THE election. The glass ceiling has been shattered, and there is no way to un-do it. I expect to see a far greater number of women and minorities of all genres running for all offices in 2010 -- even open GLBT people.
It is a BIGGER election than 1960, 1968, 1932, and 1992 -- the most monumental one since 1864.

America is more than ready. I am THRILLED to live in times where what is happening is possible-a woman and an African American as serious contenders for the presidency. You almost have the ultimate conflict about whose day has come, or whose day should come first.
I think I will be out dancing in the streets either way when the Democrats take back the White House, but what an especially sweet victory this will be.
However, Clinton and Obama are not ready. I cannot conceive of either ego acquiescing to accept the VP slot, or trusting the other to work harmoniously as the second in command. Whomever prevails will be very likely to tap Edwards as running mate rather than their most heated adversary.

Not only does America want change; Americans want something DRASTICALLY different than what we've had before.
