Healthcare Union Switches from Edwards to Obama
Healthcare Union Switches from Edwards to Obama

Associated Press

SACRAMENTO — The head of the United Healthcare Workers is urging the union's umbrella group, the SEIU state council, to support Barack Obama now that John Edwards has dropped out of the presidential race.

"We feel Obama is the best candidate for working families, and we will urge the Service Employees International Union's state council to officially endorse him at their meeting on Friday," United Healthcare Workers President Sal Rosselli said Thursday in a statement.

He said his union, which has 150,000 members in Southern and Northern California, "has a huge capacity to make a real difference in the California primary, given our extensive and experienced field operation, ability to phone bank, precinct walk and reach union members throughout the state."

SEIU has about 650,000 members in California. Many are city, county and state workers. Others are in-home support and health care workers.

Although the election is just days away, SEIU's backing could help Obama cut into Hillary Rodham Clinton's lead among Democratic base voters, many of whom are union members.

2. One thing that struck me last night
and this morning while trying to wrap my head around the difference in the Health care b/w Obama and Clinton, is that there will be mandates on both plans.

Barack said that he would mandate parents of children up to 25 yrs. old and then those who didn't insure could possibly have to pay back premiums. Sounds like a fine to me.

So why would he accuse Hillary's mandate resulting in enforcement (fine, etc) when he would do the same?

Who's plan would be most effective in lowering costs for the most amount of people to afford the premium?

I would think that would matter because if her plan would be more affordable to more people, maybe less people would be fined than his in his plan and vice versa (if his plan is more affordable to more people then less people would be fined).

How the heck do we find THIS out?

3. I was listening to Dr. Gupta
Y'all know the neurosurgeon on CNN and he was comparing and contrasting the differences. What he said was that Obama's plan would leave out several million americans. He said he would have to look at Hillary's mandate and see if it would be more or less expensive then Obama's. He also went on to say her plan of covering pre-existing conditions was a good plan. But, he also said, for the most part they are pretty similar.

4. I think Obama's plan also covers pre-existing, but not sure.
I don't know how to figure out who's plan is less expensive per individual/family. I think the answer to that is what everyone needs.

5. Misleading headline- the SEIU state council has endorsed no one - just one person (Sal) wants Obama
