Obama sweeps OU student vote in mock electionTHE NORMAN TRANSCRIPT (NORMAN, Okla.)
NORMAN, Okla. — University of Oklahoma students voted overwhelmingly for Sen. Barack Obama in a mock election set up by the OU Student Association this week.
Obama received 39.92 percent of the 754 votes. Runnerup was John McCain with 13.79 percent of the vote. Hillary Clinton received 12.33 percent of the vote and Mike Huckabee, 11.01 percent.
The election was conducted online 8 a.m. Tuesday through 9 p.m. Wednesday in order to test the student association's new online voting system. The system was first used in the fall Student Congress election but ran into some glitches, said Jordan McGee, Student Congress chair.
The online election this week revealed some errors, he said.
“We found a few problems we’ll take care of before the spring (elections),” McGee said.
Obama won every district, defined by majors, except for Architecture, where Obama tied with McCain, and Continuing Education/liberal studies, where Huckabee pulled the most votes. Both of those districts had especially low voter turnout.
The districts in which Obama received the highest percentage of the vote were International and Area Studies (12 of 18 votes), Arts (13 of 22 votes) and Languages (four of seven votes).
The districts in which Obama received the lowest percentage of votes were Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences (five of 19, McCain was second with four votes), Business (25 of 88 votes, McCain was second with 16) and Earth and Energy (four of 14, Mitt Romney was second with three votes).
