Carville and Matalin on MTP again Sunday. Carvillean quotes from the past.
Edited on Fri Feb-01-08 04:16 PM by madfloridian
Here is your guide to the guests on the Sunday morning political talk shows

Meet the Press again features the duo of Carville and Matalin. What one knows the other soon passes on to their bosses.

Their living room recently featured in Architectual Digest. Vivid colors.

The colors are as vivid as their words. I was just looking back at some of the things James Carville has said through the years. These are a few of the less colorful ones.

Carville quotes

The Democratic constituency is just like a herd of cows. All you have to do is lay out enough silage and they come running. That's why I became an operative working with Democrats. With Democrats all you have to do is make a lot of noise, lay out the hay, and be ready to use the ole cattle prod in case a few want to bolt the herd.

Loverly comment.

And another.

Eighty percent of the people who call themselves Democrats don't have a clue as to political reality. What amazes me is that you could take a group of people who are hard workers and convince them that they should support social programs that were the exact opposite of their own personal convictions. Put a little fear here and there and you can get people to vote any way you want.

Well, James, the Republicans are pretty fearful folks even more so than our party.

Truth is relative. Truth is what you can make the voter believe is the truth. If you're smart enough, truth is what you make the voter think it is. That's why I'm a Democrat. I can make the Democratic voters think whatever I want them to.”

Truth is at your convenience then.

This from both of them in the 90s. This is a doozy.

"It stretches any credulity to believe that the White House could not stop this rabid dog. He's not my husband when I speak of him as a frothing, rabid dog. He's clearly a front for the president ... If anyone is close to obstruction of justice, it's the president of these United States whose pit bull is out front."

-- Radio talk show host and former Republican strategist Mary Matalin on yesterday's "Fox News Sunday," describing her spouse, Democratic consultant James Carville, who has attacked the integrity of Whitewater independent counsel Kenneth Starr (The Washington Post, December 9, 1996).

*
James Carville's reaction to hearing of Mary Matalin's comment: "I went home and bit her" (The Washington Post, December 11, 1996).

Carville sayings.

He may be off CNN temporarily until after the primarie. But MTP is welcoming. His kind of rhetoric is more accepted than truth and honor in the good people who are trying to fix our broken party.

I won't forgive him for hurting our party and putting a damper on our celebration of the win last November. Some things are not likely to be forgotten

30. Don't forget Ohio
Apparently, Kerry had decided not to concede. There were 250,000 outstanding ballots in Ohio.

So Kerry decides to fight. In fact, he considers going to Ohio to camp out with his voters until there is a recount. This is the last thing the White House needs, especially after Florida 2000.

So what happened?
B<r> James Carville gets on the phone with his wife, Mary Matalin, who is at the White House with Bush.

"Carville told her he had some inside news. The Kerry campaign was going to challenge the provisional ballots in Ohio -- perhaps up to 250,000 of them. 'I don't agree with it, Carville said. I'm just telling you that's what they're talking about.'

"Matalin went to Cheney to report...You better tell the President Cheney told her."

Matalin does, advising Bush that "somebody in authority needed to get in touch with J. Kenneth Blackwell, the Republican Secretary of State in Ohio who would be in charge of any challenge to the provisional votes." An SOS goes out to Blackwell.

He had to stop a Kerry victory so the field would be open this cycle. These people are not to be trusted.

42. The timing is odd, isn't it? I posted my thread on Thursday and two days later the
story gets scrubbed.

Thanks for being computer literate.

Democrats should be as aware as possible about the information that would compel TeamClinton to seek a scrubbing. They also got the story scrubbed on CNN about Hillary and Schumer speaking against Alito filibuster in the Senate caucus and urging other senators to not support it. The next day Hillary put out a statement supporting filibuster after many of us inundated her office with angry calls. When she declared her candidacy the story was no longer there.

So - maybe they are preparing for Carville to lead the team OPENLY instead of just behind the scenes as he has for years.

19. More weird quotes..."great in bed"
"'Ken Starr leaks that he stands by the river and listens to hymns,' says Carville, who has perfect ptich for the idiom of sacralization. 'I mean, come on: the river, the hymns, the cleansing ... Here's a guy on a mission to cleanse the Potomac of the fornicators and sodomites who inhabit its banks, and we're not going to have any dick-sucking around here, no sir. People say, 'You gotta understand, Ken believes this.' I know Ken believes it! He believes it right to the core. That's the problem!'" (James Carville quoted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., American Notes, The New Yorker, March 9, 1998)

Great in Bed?

What does James Carville think about "the recent surmise in The Washington Post by Susan Carpenter-McMillian -- self-appointed defender of alleged presidential harassee Paula Corbin Jones -- that he 'must be great in bed' for radio talkster Mary Matalin to have married him" (Annie Groer and Ann Gerhart, The Reliable Source, The Washington Post, July 25, 1997).

He told Tim Russert (with CNBC) that "he'd gotten many calls saying he was 'the luckiest guy in the world' to have an adversary say 'how good you are in bed. ... I want to publicly thank her'" (Annie Groer and Ann Gerhart, The Reliable Source, The Washington Post, July 25, 1997).'

http://george.loper.org/rogue/democrats/james/carville.html

When I read his quotes or hear him talk, I think of all the good men who are victims of the media and the party for being honest and ethical.

It makes me furious that he can say anything ugly he wants about anyone and then gets worshipped by the media.

20. "The Democratic constituency is just like a herd of cows."
How does he just get away with talking about our party like that? He is still doing it after all these years.

We have great people in our party. They are just about absent from TV, yet Carville seems ever present.

And I remember when he compared Gore to a corpse when he endorsed Dean. I can't find transcript, though I have it saved in a folder somewhere....so I must quote News Max.

This was on national TV, one of the many attacks on good Democrats by Carville and Begala.

Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003 11:02 a.m. EST
Carville: Gore Looks Like 'a Corpse'

Former Clinton war room capo James Carville is trashing ex-Vice President Al Gore's decision this week to endorse Howard Dean, saying that Gore looked like "a corpse" at Tuesday's announcement ceremony in Harlem.

"It was the perfect picture of a doctor and a corpse standing there," Carville told radio host Don Imus Thursday morning.

""I told Steve McMahon, the media guy for Dean, who was on 'Crossfire': You have one of the three most influential presidential campaigns of my lifetime. That's the good news. The bad news is the other two are McGovern and Goldwater."

25. NY Observer wrote about Russert enabling them in 2007.
http://www.observer.com/2007/carville-matalin-joke-us?page=0%252C2

"For the love of God, please stop enabling them.

“Only 39 days until the Iowa caucuses,” Tim Russert gravely intoned over the dramatic John Williams “Meet the Press” score. “The Democratic race: too close to call. The Republican race: too close to call. Which issues, policies, strategies will resonate?”

If Mr. Russert really wanted a thoughtful and provocative discussion of that subject, then why did he—yet again—hand over half of his show to James Carville and Mary Matalin, two of the four panelists whose punditry monopolized Sunday’s one-hour broadcast? This is not an issue of disclosure. Mr. Russert correctly noted in his opening that Mr. Carville “helped put Bill and Hillary Clinton in the White House in 1992” and that Ms. Matalin supports Fred Thompson, and later pointed out that Mr. Carville has also donated money to Hillary Clinton’s ’08 campaign.

..."He went on in this spirit, but let’s stop right there, because Mr. Carville, in those few sentences, already mangled history in a way that is conveniently conducive to Mrs. Clinton. His claim that Bill Bradley “was way ahead of Al Gore in Iowa” at any point during the 2000 campaign is false on its face. In fact, eight years ago nearly to the day, an Iowa poll showed Mr. Gore throttling Mr. Bradley, 54 to 32 percent. Mr. Gore led Iowa wire-to-wire in 2000. New Hampshire was the volatile state that year, not Iowa.

Maybe this was just an innocent misstatement by Mr. Carville. After all, his broader point has the ring of truth: The Iowa leaderboard, the 2000 example notwithstanding, can change in a hurry. Any pundit in the country could have made that observation. But because of his personal devotion to the Clintons, it can’t be assumed that Mr. Carville’s motives in making it were pure."

http://www.thestar.com/News/Ideas/article/299712

"Democratic party strategist James Carville, often considered the father of "war-room" politics, isn't one to disown a political offspring.

While some cringe at the attacks and race-tinged innuendos levelled by Hillary Clinton's camp against Democratic rival Barack Obama, Carville embraces them as the stuff of hard-nosed politics. Last week, he even proposed bumper stickers aimed at those who can't stomach it: "Stop the whining."

"Running for president of the United States is a big job," said Carville, in Toronto next week for the Grano lecture series on the American race for the White House. "If you can't take that attack in a debate, how are you going to deal with the warlords in Afghanistan?

"The elite classes in this country want to sanitize politics to the point that people can't see the passion and the difference in these candidates, and I am not from that school," he told a U.S. network."

Is he admitting the attacks came from the Clinton campaign.
