New Zealand was also the first country where women gained the right to vote.

33. Actually, Merkel is Chancellor, not President
Although its the more powerful position, she is selected from the Bundestag coalition, not elected by the public (although the Presidential elections in Germany are rather indirect).

It would be interesting to look at that list. I know right know France has a minority president (he is white but not ethnically originally French) and Peru did a few years ago. Any other places?

26. If a different woman was running....
....one who isn't letting her husband runs things for her and was her OWN person....I'd vote for her in a second.

Barbara Boxer would make an excellent President.

For me... it is simply:

Obama > Clinton > McCain > Romney

I don't vote based on a person's gender or race.... sorry that gender is the most important trait for you, it is not for me.

27. Geraldine Ferraro deserves mention
First woman to run for Vice President in 1984. I remember how proud I was of her in the debate against George Bush, I thought she whupped his ass, but no (male) commentator would admit it.
I was very proud of her, it was revolutionary for Walter Mondale to select her.

Both are attorneys, wives of former governors, senators and hopefully both will be president. Cristina already achieved it, now it's Hillary's turn.

34. About Merkel
I'm sure it disappoints some that Merkel is not included in this list, but she is not the president of Germany (who is Horst Koehler). She is the Chancellor, arguably more important, but closer to being a prime minister. She was certainly not elected by the public, but represents the ruling coalition in Germany's parliament (Bundestag).

However, in the spirit of showing powerful women, she ought to be included. So should Beatrix, queen of the Netherlands, who plays an active role in politics, and Margaret, queen of Denmark.
