I think the Republicans are doomed no matter who wins on the Dem side. |
|
The ultra-right wing religious conservatives are coming apart at the seem. Pat Robertson endorsed an early loser. They can't stand McCain and regard Romney as a part of a cult. Huckabee has made some bonehead statements that make one wonder what planet he is living on. Big time Televangelists will soon be feeling their own recession as more and more of the "saved" get tired of pedophiles, lying and hypocritical homophobes fleecing their brains and their pockets not to mention the Grasssley IRS stick. In short, they have become a failed political party. NOW IS THE TIME FOR THAT VIABLE THIRD PARTY TO COME TO LIFE. Not Independent but truly Progressive. Think of another name if you will but IT IS TIME!!

7. I think, though, developing a clear-headed strategy viz. McCain, as opposed to all the panic |
|
throwing-up-of-hands/chicken little threads, might be more productive...

20. Well, You Pointed Out the Panic Reaction Yourself |

and there is certainly a lot of sentiment here that the Democratic nominee will be the likely winner in November. So that was the basis for "either-or."
I am not at all sure of a Democratic victory. Obama and Clinton both have weaknesses as candidates and are both subject to swiftboating. I would rather the base and the insiders all wake up to the fact that all bets are off and this is going to be a dogfight.

21. I'm not saying be complacent. I just don't like all this "let's give the fuck up if McCain |
|
...is the nominee" posts, usually with the addenda "which is what I'm planning to do if my candidate doesn't head the ticket..."

13. If it were a rational (or fair) process we'd be talking about the Al Gore library |
|
First of all the elec college favors the GOP and secondly the media favors the GOP especially McCain and despises Bill and Hillary Clinton. Pointing out that McCain's willing to stay in Iraq for a million years isn't going to do the trick.

But the idea that McCain is unassailable is ridiculous...

people who dont read much of the details tend to love him. the media keeps promoting him as the middle-man, so reflexively independent people find that appealing

6. They won't have any defense against "history" |
|
Think about it ... no matter who gets the Dem nomination, history will be made and the media will mention that constantly. They're already doing it. When an American is faced with the choice between simply voting for a candidate or being a part of history, I think they'll choose history. No one likes to feel like they "missed the boat" and got left behind. JMHO :-)

18. I really respect your opinion |
|
I agree that McCain has little to offer. He is selling a war product to a war-weary war consumer. It's not going to sell. And McCain doesn't have any clear-cut solutions to the economy other than tax cuts. War and tax cuts have been Bush's only solutions to our problems as well, and people know that and are tired of that.
But a third party I think would give the Republicans the only chance they have. If it siphons off enough Democratic vote, then we can have the reverse of what occurred in 1992, when Perot took a lot of votes away from GHW Bush.
I would love to live in a multi-party system. I think a parliamentary system would be much better than what we have today. Ross Perot won 20 million votes in 1992 and yet NOT ONE ELECTORAL COLLEGE VOTE. Foreigners who see how our crazy system works must shake their heads. As long as we have a system that favors the two party tyranny in America, third parties will have a very hard time. Get rid of the Electoral College first. Then have a direct vote for the President where winning separate states doesn't matter.
