4. Dunham (mother's maiden name) could be Irish or English
Edited on Sat Feb-02-08 12:14 AM by featherman
DUNHAM
Origin: Irish
Surname History:
The name Dunham in Ireland is usually of immigrant origin having been brought to the Province of Ulster by settlers who arrived from England, especially during the seventeenth century. It is in the Northern Counties that the majority of descendants bearing this name can still today be found.

5. Wow, that would be a coincidence
I was just making a joke. Boy, if I turn out to be right I'll have to wake up my wife. She won't believe until she reads it!

And I don't doubt it was an innocent - if obvious - joke.

9. I don't think Barack warms his house with peat
I think that's where the Irish version comes from; peat smoke darkens the skin like a coal miner's. I know that the Scottish surname "Black" was given for that reason.

Actually, it was an innocuous joke. But now that we're in primary mode, we have to be pretty sensitive to others' feelings. I'm sure the poster meant zero harm and it's probably a joke Barack has used.

19. God -- I find that "O'bama" crap really offensive
It's Obama, not O'bama. It's not an Irish name, and I think it ridicules actual Irish names to insert an apostrophe into anything beginning with an "o" and declare it Irish.

22. People say it seriously all the time -- and I think it's offensive to Irish people
It's not as bad as when DUers defend genocide against the Irish, but it's still irritating.

I know my dear grandmother Nellie would have heartily approved, bless her little emerald-green heart. She always had a soft spot for exquisite oratory.
