With Rudy Giuliani having now bowed out of the race for Republican nominee in this year’s presidential election, Republican gays are shifting to John McCain, the Arizona senator whose campaign issued an anti-gay automated call prior to the Florida primary earlier this week.
McCain, who reportedly had not seen or approved the content of the call, ordered that it be pulled once the content of the automated message became publicized.
The New York Sun, in its Feb. 1--3 edition, reported on the shift, quoting San Francisco political organizer Christopher Bowman as saying, "Giuliani was my man."
Still, said, Bowman, many San Francisco gay Republicans had already looked upon McCain as a fallback candidate, even before Calif. governor Arnold Schwarzenegger endorsed Sen. McCain in the wake of Giuliani’s withdrawal.
