Jesus! Did the Clinton era suck or what? How did we manage through it? |
|
Edited on Sat Feb-02-08 12:31 PM by Neshanic
I mean all that peace, all that prosperity, paying down the debt? Wow what a horrible time you kiddies had during that time. Thank God you have Bush in to make sense of that awfull time, and now have a candidate that generation baits like a Rovian shill furiously rewriting the sixties.
I am so sorry for voting for this guy Bill. You have all made me seen the light. Now you can make me see how Obama is a compilation of a the warm and fuzzy of the Kennedy years, except he so much smarter and so much more pure.
You vote for him and he will be our Carter. No love there, as Carter was the probably the worst Democartic president we ever had. And before you pop off about how full of shit I am, you better have lived through that miserable time, and his miserable presidency that ushered in the conservatives.
Obama = Carter. He will not be up for the shitstorm that approaches.
Hillary will.

Either Hillary or Obama will be much better than McCain.
If Obama is President, he will need Hillary's help in the Senate to get his program passed.
The same is true if Hillary becomes President.

25. OK, experience...HC was a lawyer, BO practiced law and taught. |
|
Equal experience there? BO worked to organize poor communities, HC worked to help kids...equal experience there? Both are US Senators with HC having a few years on BO...not quite equal experience, but close. So, what are we down to to make the argument that HC is so much more experienced than BO? I can only conclude that it was HC's years as First Lady and that just doesn't cut it with me.
So, I think what has happened here is that the Clinton Campaign has put out this word "experience" and it is really a code word for bringing Bill back. Why don't you just admit it?

|
Nice try, attempting to blur the difference between Hillary's experience and Obama's. But even leaving aside her 8 years in the White House and 10 years in the Arkansas statehouse -- always functioning as a trusted advisor to her governor or president husband -- she also has more experience in private law practice and twice as much time in the senate as Barrack.
When it comes to experience, there is a LARGE gap between the two candidates.

|
During the nineties, I had a great paying job that allowed me to make large investments in the stock market, which was booming to high heaven.
Because of that prosperity, I retired in 1999 with enough to last me rest of my life. Now, I have to find things to do to fill my time. I never had that problem before Clinton took office. Darn you Bill Clinton!

We threw hundreds of thousands of people in jail and by the end of his term we had a higher incarceration rate than China or Libya. That's pretty awesome, right?
Another plus, people in jail don't count as unemployed or poor. So it helped contribute to the economic "miracle" of the nineties. Cool.

Sentencing for crack was made far worse than for other drugs. I guess it was a good way to be seen as "tough on drugs" by the middle, while primarily %^#$ing an ethnic group that wouldn't dare vote Republican.

He kept a specific campaign promise that he made to the American people, and doing so torpedoed any chance for him to get any cooperation from Congress.
Do you know what that campaign promise was?

And now that this Supreme Being has told his supporters not to vote for ANYONE but him ever or I'll slap that grin off your face, I guess this election is over and I can go back to beating the crap out of myself for ever voting for that bastard Clinton who brought such freakin MISERY to this country with all surplus money and jobs and prosperity and peace, son of a bitch that he is!

|
Edited on Sat Feb-02-08 01:15 PM by Jed Dilligan
It was hard living around all that phony prosperity. All those pumped-up dot-commers driving up the rents. It was not a great time. There were a bunch of rich spoiled brats running around; the rest of us had to prostitute ourselves to them or suffer the consequences. I mean that literally--so many young women of my generation got drawn into porn or prostitution.
That's also when non-indie movies became totally unwatchable. The culture deteriorated into reality TV and crass VH-1 cycles of celebrity worship and schadenfreude. The academic gap between racial groups, after closing for a while, began to widen again. Affirmative action was shot down in many places and non-Asian minority college enrollment declined. Young black and latino men were sucked into the gang life in unprecedented numbers. Meanwhile the prison population grew exponentially and the toker in the White House did nothing but ramp up the Drug War insanity.
I don't blame the Clintons for all of this, but it's not a time I want to relive.

42. You should have used that sarcasm smilie because |
|
a lot of the people on this board are just not going to get it.
I've had the same feeling about Obama being like Carter but for a different reason. Carter went into his presidency promising to reach across the aisle and unify the government (sound familiar, Obama fans?)and was a good enough man that he had no concept of the den of thieves and sociopaths he was entering. He was criticised by all sides by trying to please everyone and pleasing no one. He reached out to the GOP and ended up with a back full of daggers.
Still, he was one of our best presidents, all things considered. He inherited runaway inflation started by the tripling of oil prices by OPEC. He managed to get the Strategic Oil Reserve set up and running and got those prices down. Nixon and Ford had simply ignored the problem. He also appointed Volcker head of the Fed, knowing Volcker wanted to raise interest rates to punishing levels to curtail inflation. It happened, Carter got blamed, and it worked. Carter ended up doing 4 years of damage control after 8 years of GOP indifference and bungling and still managed to have a net increase in jobs, if not in wages.
Obama will likely be a one term president if he gets in, blamed for all the fallout of the last 8 dismal years. If he learns from that first set of daggers in his back, he might be as effective as Carter was. If not, he will make certain we don't have another black president for a very, very long time and another Democratic president for almost as long.

Yes, there was a mess after the republicans, but all in all his presidency was a failure of an epic scale. He too trusting of the opposition, and he dd not come across as the President. His speeches were miserable and morose, and who wanted to hear that; they inspired no one. The inaction and screwups of the hostages could and do fill books.
He was too honest and trusting to be President. He did some good things, but they were far outnumbered by his inaction on items that even if symbolic would of raised the countys spirits.
It was his presidency that ushered in the Conservatives. It was his uninspiring leadership that caused it.
Obama will be our Carter. We have a monster looming in all categories of problems. I want someone in there that knows the territory, and that's not Obama.
