Many on DU recently have expressed criticism of Obama's idealistic qualities. After watching a program on the History Channel called '1968' I have a good feeling I know what's wrong with this country. Nobody believes in anything anymore. Why is it that America has some of the lowest voter turnout amoung all of the Industrialized nations? 1968 killed the American Dream and things haven't been the same since. You had MLK and RFK killed within months of each other. You have various social uprisings and people taking to the streets including the Black Panthers and college kids. Whenever people threaten to use force through ARMED REBELLION...obviously you've done something to tick them off.
After nearly 30 years of political scandals including Watergate, Iran-Contra, Monica Lewinsky, Bush's scandal-plagued Administration...this country could use a good injection of idealist hope. That's nothing to SHUN! I'm sensing a real pendulum shift in American politics within 10-15 years...if not sooner. People are tired of being told to live in fear, and Obama represents a real change to the way politics in run in this country.
I can't come around to voting for Clinton because she's beginning to come off as just as stubborn as Bush. She can't even admit her IWR vote was wrong. That's a PROBLEM!!! 3 years from now, I don't want to look back and say..."we should have seen this coming." Even though I don't agree with Obama on everything, one thing I can say is I have the utmost respect for him because he can admit his faults. That shows character...and in politics...BALLS. I don't see that in Hillary Clinton...I see a facade. Even though I DO respect her, it's not nearly as strong as the respect I have for Obama. In Hillary, I see a person like most politicians who will say and do anything to get elected. It's always about the Endgame for Pols (Politicians) like her...never about the emotion. Case in point being the Clinton campaigns willingness to break their union with Black voters in order to turn Obama into the "Black candidate" and tarnish his reputation with Southern Whites...which APPEARS to have worked. It's these types of baiting games that turn me off about the Clinton brand.
But obviously voters are getting caught up in the nostalgia about the Clintons after 7 years of BushCo. and blocking out all of the negatives that came along with the Clinton Presidency. But hey, nostalgia wears off and definently will if she becomes President and we go through all of that over again.

And it's not meant to be snarky.
Why "believe"? I understand supporting or not supporting a candidate.
Maybe I'm jaded but, why is it necessary to fall in love with candidates?
Any candidate that comes this far in a presidential race is a political animal. That's why I can't get all weepy and crazy when bad stuff comes out about our candidates. For me, heroes are not found in the political arena or we'd have a functional country, a respected constitution, we'd be honoring treaties, equality, etc. You know... we wouldn't be a third world country but for these bastards.
Until recently I was and Edwards supporter and am a listener now. I'm listening for policy positions and have not slammed either Senator Clinton or Senator Obama in GD Primaries.

5. I believed in John Edwards' message about the poor and corporations |

and I still do and will after the election of 2008 is long gone. Obama seems like a wish given human form, where so many see what they want or need to see. I don't despair the man, but the message seems based on vague notions of "unity" and "hope". KIng's message was based on economic and social justice for blacks, and his lifelong works culminated in that goal. Many do not see that for Obama, and thus their skeptical nature towards him. Hillary is really all about herself, and always has been, and likely always will be.

It's too bad people aren't listening. Or maybe they should see my thread about Open Government.
