Obama, Guns, and Jesus

Obama fights back with guns and Jesus

DEMOCRATIC presidential hopeful Barack Obama has assured Western voters he believes in Jesus as well as the rights of gun owners.

Campaigning in conservative Idaho, Senator Obama warned about hoax emails saying he was secretly a Muslim who might want to destroy the US.

"I've been going to the same church for 20 years, praising Jesus," the Illinois senator told 10,000 people packed into a basketball arena. He is a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.

Senator Obama urged those at the rally not to believe everything they heard about him.

"They send out these e-mails saying, 'You know Obama; he's a Muslim and he doesn't pledge allegiance to the flag'," he said.

"Don't try to just insult not just me but people of the Islamic faith by playing on people's fears. I know who I am.

"And then there are people who say, 'well, he doesn't believe in the Second Amendment (right to bear arms)', even though I come from a state - we've got a lot of hunters in downstate Illinois. And I have no intention of taking away folks' guns."

6. Clinton unloaded against Obama over gun control yesterday
"(Clinton) unloaded against Mr. Obama over gun control; he said on Saturday that he supported the rights of gun owners, but the Clinton camp pointed to a 1996 questionnaire on which Mr. Obama said he opposed the manufacture and sale of handguns.

“My understanding is that really within the space of 4 or 5 years, he’s had several positions on a number of really challenging issues,” she said.

9. I am glad he addressed both
It does counter the muslim email sent to incite fear that is nothing but a lie

The 2nd amendment - no surprise there, Obama is a constitutional lawyer, he teaches the constitution, he knows it, he will uphold it.

What is the problem with either of these?

11. This forum isn't really the place for nuance
but you can see the dimensions of Obama in his response to these old political mudpies. He did fine. But it struck me how the new guy to all of this chose to fall back on expressing his affinity with god and guns. It's not a competitive observation, but something to measure, nonetheless. He seems so 'moderate' to have the support of so many progressives.

Then, here comes Hillary with a curious criticism of his harder line on guns in the past . . . Its just amazing how these confrontations twist and turn.
