http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdYByptC8mY&eurl=http://hotair.com/archives/2007/03/05/audio-hillary-obama-develop-southern-accents-for-selma/

After you watch it please research and find out for yourself that in Selma, Alabama, Bloody Sunday happened on March 7, 1965. Obama was born August 4, 1961.

These are some of the reasons that I do not find his speeches inspiring, because they are words, not actions and in this case not even the truth.

WTF?

:wtf:

10. Not necessarily. He is being untruthful with the audience. That is the real issue.
I suppose all O supporters are trying to find info to debunk, but they won't and this thread will sink because of their domination on this board, thats usually how it works.

11. Are you referring to mention of the ticket received by Barack
Obama to attend college in the US? If so, I believe he was referring to his father, Barack Obama, Sr., being the recipient of that ticket, not himself.

Here is a rough transcript of the video of him giving a speech in Selma Alabama.

"What happened in Selma, Alabama and Birmingham also stirred the conscience of the nation. It worried folks in the White House who said, “You know, we’re battling Communism. How are we going to win hearts and minds all across the world? If right here in our own country, John, we’re not observing the ideals set fort in our Constitution, we might be accused of being hypocrites.” So the Kennedy’s decided we’re going to do an air lift. We’re going to go to Africa and start bringing young Africans over to this country and give them scholarships to study so they can learn what a wonderful country America is.
This young man named Barack Obama got one of those tickets and came over to this country. He met this woman whose great great-great-great-grandfather had owned slaves; but she had a good idea there was some craziness going on because they looked at each other and they decided that we know that the world as it has been it might not be possible for us to get together and have a child. There was something stirring across the country because of what happened in Selma, Alabama, because some folks are willing to march across a bridge. So they got together and Barack Obama Jr. was born. So don’t tell me I don’t have a claim on Selma, Alabama. Don’t tell me I’m not coming home to Selma, Alabama."

It got rave reviews and thunderous applause, too bad it didn't happen to be grounded in the truth.

Barack was born 3 years before the bloody sunday. His parents did not get together because of bloody sunday and the civil rights movement. there is no place to low for him to go.

16. Ummm, actually I read the post and watched the video.
The civil rights movement did not begin in Selma with Bloody Sunday although that day did mark a big milestone in the movement. We had already seen the Montgomery bus boycott, the Little Rock nine, the March on Washington, the sit-ins at lunch counters, etc. The march across the bridge at Selma was made memorable because of the level of violence that was directed toward the marchers.

I did not get the impression from watching the video that Barack was claiming that his parents met because of Bloody Sunday, but because of other events that happened that led to Bloody Sunday and therefore he felt the connection. I suppose it's just a matter of interpretation.

17. I watched the video and I get your point.
It appears that he is twisting the timeline of his personal background to fit into an historically significant event in the civil rights movement.

19. I am an Obama supporter, but this is an interesting point and concerns me.
Edited on Sun Feb-03-08 01:29 PM by calmblueocean
I'm curious whether you found it on some other site, or discovered it yourself.

It's clear that in the first part of his speech, he subtly changes the subject from Selma in 1965 to the Montgomery bus boycotts of 1955 - 1956.

Yet something happened back here in Selma, Alabama. Something happened in Birmingham that sent out what Bobby Kennedy called, “Ripples of hope all around the world.” Something happened when a bunch of women decided they were going to walk instead of ride the bus after a long day of doing somebody else's laundry, looking after somebody else's children.

But when he says:

There was something stirring across the country because of what happened in Selma, Alabama, because some folks are willing to march across a bridge. So they got together and Barack Obama Jr. was born. So don't tell me I don't have a claim on Selma, Alabama. Don't tell me I’m not coming home to Selma, Alabama.

There's just no way to integrate those statements. I'd be willing to cut him some slack if he hadn't mentioned the marches specifically. But civil rights marches in 1965 cannot influence people back in 1960 - 61.

This will be a clipping in my worry file about Barack. I'm sure he might say that he just had his timelines mixed up, or misspoke, mentioning Selma when he really meant to keep his focus around earlier civil rights actions that affected his parents, and how they led to Selma. But it doesn't look good. It looks like pandering. It looks like lying.

Thanks for posting this.

ADDENDUM: An article on this controversy says: "Obama said later that he meant to credit the entire civil rights movement with his parents' union, not just the Bloody Sunday marchers."

On reflection, I feel certain that this wasn't intentional. It would be stupid to make such an obvious lie, and his earlier attempts to frame the talk in the timeline of Montgomery make more sense. But it still shows a certain recklessness. I could easily see the clip showing up in some Republican attack ad. It stays in my worry file.
