9. Yes, and in a serious manner.
They said there are rumblings in the McCain camp, and that Jeb could really help him with Florida in the general election. This year, no way is the Republican nominee going to win without Florida.

Now, I personally think that would be the stupidest, craziest thing I've ever seen, but McCain is a little whack, so I guess you can't discount it.

That could very well be the case - unify the party and bring Florida into the fold (as though they don't have that state rigged already).

22. When I first heard it, I was all "WTF?"
Then I got to thinking... those batshit crazy Republicans would actually LOVE to stick it to us by getting another Bush a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

This is going to be a campaign of animosity and division from their perspective. What better way to perpetuate the divide that has served them so well than to nominate Jeb Bush for Vice President?

As sickening a ticket as McCain/Powell would be, McCain/Rice is downright frightening.

I can see where McCain thinks Powell could boost him even further on national security, but good gawd, why would America want to elect a ticket that got it wrong from the get-go, and lied about it when they had to?

Edited on Sun Feb-03-08 10:46 PM by Old Crusoe
The district she represented is now represented by far-Right thug Vern Buchanon, who "won" in 06 under very fishy circumstances over a worthy Democrat, Christine Jennings.

A revived and very focused Jennings is challenging him again this year and I think ol' Vern could be on his way out.

Harris opted for a state-wide GOP primary in 06 and was decimated.

I think her hay day has come and gone.

Sorry you took me seriously. I was in such a funk to read that post about McCain thinking about Jeb as a vice presidential possibility I went on auto-rewind to election 2000 days; but upon further reflection, I think McCain would have to be extremely foolish to pick him. He has to know how polarizing Jeb would be, and McCain would be risking attracting defecting Dems with that choice.

Sam

PS I thought about you over the weekend when I was watching Law & Order. The crew was trying to track down a serial killer who they suspected worked at a fish market. "Aqua Velva must be his best friend," one of the cops muttered.

8. Tim Pawlenty.
Pawlenty survived the blue wave in 06, he's from a purple state, he will serve as "high-profile host" to the GOP convention in the Twin Cities, and appeals to the "moderate" indies McCain purports to represent, as opposed to some good-ol-boy slapdasher like Haley Barbour.

McCain could pander to the Far Fundie Right and choose someone from their ranks, but he's not going to win the White House in a general election by trying to please those people. They're unpleasable until Jesus himself descends from the clouds and takes CATCHER IN THE RYE out of the nation's schools once and for all. McCain might just as well bolster what little is appealing about him, and Pawlenty offers that demographic.

38. I think Haley Barbour would be a throwaway.
The logical thing is to pick a VP based on his/her ability to help you in a state you're unsure about winning.

I'd wager Mississippi is a safe bet for Republicans in November. McCain will need help in Florida, Ohio, Virginia more than anything.

I don't know who could help him with Ohio, but Jeb Bush could help in Florida, and George Allen could help with Virginia.

Both rather noxious choices, but they make sense to me.

66. Hi, UALRBSofL. Well to be honest I try to avoid cable news. It's not always
possible, of course, but of the batch, FOX seems little more than a GOP propaganda network.

I think you are right -- the really far-flung Conservative Right actually think McCain is "liberal." If I told you a crescent wrench was a blueberry muffin, my guess is you would think I was chemically altered or phenomenally stupid. That's how I feel about FOX News.

Romney does seem to have more cash in his pockets than McCain, but he's so damned creepy that voters are just not feeling the fire. It kind of looks to me as if McCain will win their nom by default.

But McCain looks and sounds awfully weary and exhausted to launch an intense, white-knuckled quest for the White House at this point.
