Obama: "supported banning the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns."

Fact Check: Sen. Obama and Guns

2/2/2008 7:25:05 PM

Today, Sen. Obama went to Idaho to reassure voters there that he has consistently supported gun ownership, saying that he has "no intention of taking away folks' guns."

But the AP reported that in a 1996 questionnaire Sen. Obama said he "supported banning the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns." (Read the questionnaire yourself HERE.)

Which one of Sen. Obama's positions do you think the Republican nominee will tout in the fall?

Here's the Questionnaire:

1. Yet another example
of how little change Obama actually represents. If he really had principle and courage, he'd still be set on taking away those guns. Coward. Appeaser. Politician.

2. Taking away guns is different then banning handguns...
Please stop with this silly twisting and misrepresentation of the facts. Banning handguns is different then banning guns altogether. And even if he does not believe in banning handguns today 1996 was 12 years ago, can an opinion not change without a flip flop?

Personally, I believe everyone should have the right to have guns, but handguns and automatic rifles are stupid

5. Tell that to the red voters.
Why do you think Kerry went hunting in that stupid outfit. He's a hunter, anyway, but he botched the photo op.

You think "everyone should have the right to have guns, but handguns and automatic rifles are stupid." Maybe you want to explain that position a little more. I believe that most people who own guns, have handguns, but I'm willing to be corrected on that if someone else has the facts.

7. Sorry but a handgun ban would prevent law-abiding citizens from defending themselves with the most
effective/efficient tool available, a handgun.

A handgun is the first choice of over 840,000 sworn law enforcement officers in the U.S. for self-defense.

3. But I heard a rumor that Obama just joined the NRA and is going hunting with Cheney and Scalia!

4. What does the next question read?
"B. Ban the manufacture, sale, and possession of ---------- weapons?" Does anyone know what the faded blank said? Is this Obama's infamous "ban private ownership of semi-automatics" statement? Too bad the gun section is so faded.

Clinton is no better on guns. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Pray Heller beats DC at the Supreme Court, or this will bite us in the ass come November.

Now I'm off to a gun show.

9. In Obama's elected career he has never voted to ban handguns.
Sounds like he had these ideas before he got into elected office and toned it down because he found they wouldn't work.

I'd like a president who admits when they were wrong. We're not going to get that from Hillary.
