Two Words: Child Support
That's all I have to say about mandates creating anything universal.

1. actually that is a massive success story
I am old enough to remember when it was assumed that child support wouldn't be paid. Now, it usually is. Is it perfect? No. But it is way, way, way, way better than it was just a generation ago, let alone the couple of generations ago that I can recall.

3. Mine did.
All of it.

I had no problem with the concept, though at times I had trouble making the payments on time.

8. It didn't create universal child support
Mandates don't guarantee anything.

4. I didn't say they all did
Edited on Sun Feb-03-08 02:04 PM by dsc
but under your logic lets have no laws against murder. People get murdered so the laws clearly don't work. In point of fact, the vast majority of children get some support and well over two thirds get timely payments of every cent to which they are entitled. By any statistical measure that is immensely better than it was even as recently as 1993.

6. It didn't create universal child support
She's lying when she says her mandates create universal health care. It doesn't.

9. I don't think she ever claims that it will be totally 100% compliance
but it will be at least (by every single, solitary expert who has looked) 10 million people better than Obama's.

10. Yes she does
Every time she says Obama's plan isn't universal and leaves millions of people out, she's pretending her plan covers everyone and doesn't leave anyone out. It's a lie.

7. In EVERY state
And yet all kids still don't get child support, in part because people making $10 hr can't pay it and partly because it's impossible to enforce. Mandates don't create universal anything - it's just a lie.

11. They throw parents who don't pay in jail here
Two states - KS and MO. So compliance here is pretty good.

20. And I can't say I disagree with that
Kids need to eat. If you parent them, you have to take care of them.

15. How is that at all different?
His mandates for children are no different at all than hers for everyone.

16. Meaning hers won't work?
That's right, mandates don't solve everything. Obama doesn't say it does. It's called honesty. He does want parents to understand that health care is something they have a responsibility to provide to their children. With SCHIP, it's also cheap to purchase because kids are cheap to cover.

he is just as much a liar. He has repeatedly said his plan covers ALL CHILDREN. Not MOST CHILDREN but ALL CHILDREN. It would be one thing if he had some principled opposition to mandates. He doesn't. He just is doing the politically easy thing.
