Conciliatory Bill Clinton Courts Black Voters At Los Angeles Churches

GARDENA, Calif. (AP) - Former President Bill Clinton struck a conciliatory note toward his wife's opponent in the Democratic presidential primary during an appearance before black parishioners today in a Los Angeles-area church.

The former president never mentioned Barack Obama by name when he spoke for about 20 minutes this morning on Hillary Rodham Clinton's behalf at the City of Refuge church in Gardena.

But he described this year's Democratic contest as "an embarrassment of riches."

This morning's planned visits to several churches come about a week after Obama routed Hillary Clinton in the racially charged South Carolina primary.

A Field Poll released today shows her long-standing advantage over Obama has collapsed. The race is now a dead heat, with Clinton at 36% and Obama at 34% among likely Democratic primary voters.
