NY Times: "Support for Clinton, Driven by Respect"

February 4, 2008
Support for Clinton, Driven by Respect

By TIMOTHY WILLIAMS

...“We think Hillary is going to do very well,” Ms. Chappelle told the crowd after Mr. Lopez arrived. “We have no question about that. But we don’t want a situation where people say, ‘Oh, she’s going to win anyway.’ Well, I think she’s going to win, too, but we still need people to get the vote out.”

Though Ms. Chappelle, poised, focused and rarely off message, navigates the many demands of her job with seeming ease, this is her first major campaign. She still occasionally blushes when she talks about Senator Clinton, her “hero,” and says she has never wavered in her passionate support. Like Senator Clinton, Ms. Chappelle speaks with a flat Midwestern accent, and like the senator, at times she gives a hint of a Southern drawl, which she picked up during college in Virginia.

“I’ve always had a lot of respect for her in being in politics in general,” said Ms. Chappelle, who was accompanied during an interview by an aide who recorded the conversation. “As a woman, it’s not easy. And when she got elected to the Senate, she really adjusted to her role. She did a lot better even then people thought she would.”

In an e-mail message, Senator Clinton said she was no less a fan of Ms. Chappelle. “Robin Chappelle is exactly who you want on your team when navigating the politics of New York,” she said. “Her smarts, tenacity and dedication are invaluable. Plus, everyone loves her!”...

8. She has my respect. Not my vote in the primary, but still my respect.
She's smart, passionate, hardworking and has a really good ability to run a large organization.

But her triangulating and nuanced postions might have a tougher time winning a large enough majority to beat the cheat machine we are up against. My first choice, between the two choices we have left, is the native wing of the D party, not the grafted wing.

Come the general, though, I will fight for her, or him, or them, or whichever what the most disorganized party on earth manages to come up with.

Mutual respect is as good, or better, than silver stakes and garlic to destroy the nazi bastards who currently occupy our government.

(But if current DU behavior remains the norm, we will have to rely on silver stakes and garlic.)

9. Thanks for this.
I saw her in CA on Friday, and really wondered how ANY of the candidates can keep on going. The night before, she'd been in that 2 hour debate in L.A., then went to San Diego for a huge rally, then flew to San Jose for another, then drove to San Francisco for another--all in one day! The next day she was in Arizona. And this has been going on for a month already. She looked refreshed and confident. I'm surprised none of them have completely broken down. And although they have their regular jobs and contributions, they are not getting paid for all this nationtrotting.

Cheers for all the candidates!
