Support for Clinton, Driven by Respect
By TIMOTHY WILLIAMS...“We think Hillary is going to do very well,” Ms. Chappelle told the crowd after Mr. Lopez arrived. “We have no question about that. But we don’t want a situation where people say, ‘Oh, she’s going to win anyway.’ Well, I think she’s going to win, too, but we still need people to get the vote out.”
Though Ms. Chappelle, poised, focused and rarely off message, navigates the many demands of her job with seeming ease, this is her first major campaign. She still occasionally blushes when she talks about Senator Clinton, her “hero,” and says she has never wavered in her passionate support. Like Senator Clinton, Ms. Chappelle speaks with a flat Midwestern accent, and like the senator, at times she gives a hint of a Southern drawl, which she picked up during college in Virginia.
“I’ve always had a lot of respect for her in being in politics in general,” said Ms. Chappelle, who was accompanied during an interview by an aide who recorded the conversation. “As a woman, it’s not easy. And when she got elected to the Senate, she really adjusted to her role. She did a lot better even then people thought she would.”
In an e-mail message, Senator Clinton said she was no less a fan of Ms. Chappelle. “Robin Chappelle is exactly who you want on your team when navigating the politics of New York,” she said. “Her smarts, tenacity and dedication are invaluable. Plus, everyone loves her!”...
