Strangest oft repeated meme I see on this board
Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 12:26 AM by featherman
Lots of strange stuff but the oddest and one that comes up a lot is that it is somehow a bad thing for a candidate to be getting good press. Seriously.

After many, many campaigns I really can't think of a single politician running for office who has ever wished he or she was getting less favorable press coverage.

Every candidate wants better press coverage. And if you are not getting it, you will not do as well with the voting public who depend on the news coverage to find out about you.

It's frankly laughable to think otherwise.

1. The better press you get, the more in bed you are with the powers that be
follow the money! Who benefits? Who benefits from monopoly media?

Bush the lesser has always had great press or look at Lieberman.

3. The MSM pushed: Bu$h over Gore and Kerry...
...both were given the shaft because both were opposed to media consolidation in the hands of a few corporations. A democracy, however, cannot survived consolidated media. We witness the sound of one hand clapping.

Gore "lost" debates because he rolled his eyes in amazement at the moron who had been sold to the American public--the latest empty suit. The empty suit "won" because he didn't rall on his face.

Was Kerry served well by a media that made tons of $$ on the swift boat liars? Why would any reputable media play such lies?

If we had media that wasn't consolidated and wasn't beholding to corporations, then this wouldn't be an issue.

TV exists to keep on watching for the next commercial.

Are there drug ads on TV? Is this a source of revenue? Whose political agenda might end this happy flow of $$$?

There is something to be gained by having a horse race (more eyes for the next commercial), but if any Dem gets a free ride like Bu$h did BEWARE!

4. It pushes expectations way out of control
so that even if a candidate wins, or does 10 times better than expected, it still appears as a "loss" because the expectations were so high. Always better to undershoot and then have a SC like victory than the other way around.

5. great propaganda can lead many a lemming to vote...
...against their own best interests.

Of COURSE it's "good" for THEM (the media) and the candidates THEY chose to get "good press".

6. Doesn't it depend on who is giving you the good press?
A man is known by his enemies. If Rush Limbaugh suddenly starts talking nice about you, either you're doing something wrong or he's trying to scare your supporters away from you.

7. Well, you know, when you're in politics and you generating 20.000 folks
to come out to all of your venues....in the winter

You win the first state that you had been told you couldn't win

when you are going against a 2 headed well established funded and connected Goliath

and you're behind for an entire year by double digits

and raise 32 million in one month.

You shouldn't get any press.
