Undecided Feb. 5th voter here: Obama supporters, make your pro-Obama case here
Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 11:01 AM by LSdemocrat
Hello everyone, I'm an undecided voter here in Missouri struggling to choose between Clinton and Obama. I genuinely like both candidates and think both would make very good presidents, but I feel like I need some more information before making the decision, so I'm turning to DU.

First, a few things about myself and what I'm looking for. I'm a former Edwards supporter. I'm not an issue voter per se, but instead I'm more focused on these areas:

1. Who will make the best president
2. Who will run the best general election campaign (not the same thing as electability)
3. Who will stand up for the Democratic party

I would greatly appreciate any links, articles, first-hand knowledge, and insight into:

1. Obama's core convictions: not a laundry list of hot campaign issues, but his core, driving passions that he will always strive for
2. Decision-making ability: evidence of making strong decisions and his decision making process in office or other professional life
3. Obama's inner circle: who does he surround herself with and rely on for advice, and what does that say about him

Please, keep it positive, any negative comments will not help your candidate.

On edit: Hillary supporters, here is the thread to make arguments for your candidate: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x4383082

Thank you in advance for your time, thoughtfulness, and impassioned advocacy.

You can skip ahead to where Michelle Obama speaks. I recommend it because she so eloquently touches on EACH of the points you mentioned. And who better to hear it from than the woman who knows him best and will keep him honest?

Trust me, you will enjoy that video. You'll never consider it time wasted. Michelle may just be a better speaker than Barack.

2. firstly
let me tell you that i am an economics major. I think Obama's stimulus package is the best as it provides immediate relief to lower and middle class families, who will then immediately spend the money thus directly putting it back into the economy and boosting it.
Clintonian economics in comparison relies on outsourcing jobs and IT investment, which is only a temporary fix to our economic crisis. Obama has the best economic advisors known to man, including the owner and founder of the federal reserve.l

Secondly, hillarys healthcare system is a debacle in comparison to obamas. Obama does not force mandates which will "garnish your wages" to pay to insurance companies. I want a single payer system and Obamas plan of lowering costs of health insurance while still giving you the OPTION to buy allows for the prevention of the entire privatization of healthcare. to get single payer healthcare, we need to get employers and insurance companies far away as possible, hillarys healthcare makes this impossible as she directly ties your wage with your healthcare, meaning if you lose your job or are in debt, you still have to pay exceedingly and will be penalised for not doing so, pulling millions into bankruptcy. Her plan is currently failing in many states. Obamas plan in comparison has been recommended by the highest order of physician and nurses across this country.

Thirdly, JUDGEMENT. He was against the war in Iraq, still had the sense to fund it to give our troops bodyarmor AFTER we were forced in there by bush and hillary. He also voted against the bankruptcy bill... hillary voted for it, and then said "she was glad it didnt pass".

These are just things off the top of my head.

7. Good post and welcome to DU!
I especially liked what you said about the healthcare mandates. I've argued until I'm blue in the face with people about it. It's not only a potential general election loser for us, but it will also entrench the insurance companies even further in our healthcare system.

5. American badly needs to believe in itself again.
We need to be led in the direction of positive change. We need to assure ourselves we are not the people the Bush administration has presented to the world. We need the world to look at us, and in an instant know we have repudiated business as usual. We need them to see in our dynamic new leader a commitment to bury foreign policy and war based upon religious scapegoating. Nothing will tell the world we are better than the past than Obama as president.

If a Clinton assumes the white house, we're going to look like a banana republic run by two families that play golf and go boating together.

8. He has made restoring habeas corpus and separation of powers part of his platform.
He was endorsed by the attorneys representing detainees at Gitmo.
