Hillary Clinton cries in Connecticut
Hillary Clinton cries in Connecticut
by Jason George

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sen. Hillary Clinton teared up this morning at an event at the Yale Child Study Center, where she worked while in law school in the early 1970s.

A doctor, who was introducing Clinton, began to choke up, leading Clinton's eyes to fill with tears, which she wiped out of her left eye. At the time, the doctor was saying how proud he was that sheepskin-coat, bell-bottom-wearing young woman he met in 1972 was now running for president.

"Well, I said I would not tear up; already we're not exactly on the path," Clinton said with emotion after the introduction.

Clinton is holding a roundtable discussion with Connecticut women to talk about childcare and healthcare.

Who introduced emotion into this meeting of two adults who have known each other for 35 years? Are you really that dead of spirit that you want our leaders to be also? That Doctor had to be in his 70's or 80's by now, and he began choking up in public thinking about the young student, an idealistic young woman much like many of Barack Obama's supporters now, who grew from her idealistic roots into a woman who may soon be President of the United States.

Do you have any older mentors in your life? People who represent what you hope to achieve in life? If one of them some day stands before both you and the world, and chokes up honoring the memory of the young man or woman who you once were, if you don't have an emotional reaction to that moment I warn you; don't come looking for my vote if I am still alive to see it.

108. Don't kid yourself. It's a win-win for her.
She shows emotion and a softer side, rebutting the automaton media stereotype; and, when she's attacked by the likes of Chris Matthews and other TV pundits, she'll benefit from an empathy surge, just like in New Hampshire.

Note that I'm not saying her emotional display was intentional or calculated. I'm merely stating what I view as the likely results. The only way in which the moment doesn't benefit her is if it is somehow revealed within the next 10 hours (via some leaked memo or email) as having been planned; and the benefit won't be as great if the media doesn't hype it. (Though I should note that I heard it mentioned on CNN within 2 minutes of turning-on the TV, just now, at 3:10pm Eastern.)

I honestly don't understand how you can stomach some of your fellow Obama supporters. I'm well aware that there are some Clinton supporters who are total idiots on a regular basis ... but the level of vitriol and vindictiveness doesn't come close. It's kept me at arms length.

I haven't had to make the difficult choice, being from PA (4/22 primary)... it'll be all over by the time I get to place a vote. However, I'd never become so invested in ANY candidacy to the point that would allow me to be so ugly and cruel to people who believed differently.

This is an AMAZING time in Democratic History! Can't you understand how a moment like that would touch her?If you don't then you are pretty hard hearted.

This has nothing to do with issues or Obama vs Clinton;this is about an historic moment in time - Hillary can tear up if she wants to!I hope both she and Barack are revelling in this. And I hope they realize how very proud of them we all are.

45. It's sort of insensitve to criticize someone for tearing
If you said she was pretending to tear that's one thing, but if that wasn't your point then, What the hell is wrong you with? Why are so many Obamatons so insensitive? Bill Clinton, Bush I, Romney, and others have shown tears at times. Is that wrong? I think Hubert Humphrey once said, "If a man can't cry, is he really a man?"

I question the timing with this candidate.

I believe that a certain segment will "fall for it"...again.

If Hill is the nominee, it won't work for her--long term.

for her this maybe all began. If you do not believe places can be emotional, then come with me to Philadelphia, Miss. and visit Mt. Nebo Baptist church and see the tombstone memorial to Goodman, Chaney and Schwerner. Hear the story how these three young men were killed simply because one was Black and two were Jewish. Yes,places can make one emotional and maybe eyes will tear up as it did me, and it was 8 years later before I was placed upon G-d's good earth.

56. That is NOT what happened! Good lord! Just watched the event!
I just got through watching the whole event streamed live on CNN!

The only reason she was wiping her eyes was that in the middle of the Q & A session she had a MAJOR COUGHING fit! It actually took her several minutes to get over it... had to ask for water & cough drops. Because of the severity of the coughing fit her eyes watered for about 10 minutes afterward & she had to keep wiping them!

GOOD GOD is there anything negative you folks won't say or believe about her?!?!
Seriously this is getting absurd!

79. The only thing I have to say about this is
if you are going to run on "toughness" and "experience", it does not help to start crying all over the place. If you want to break down barriers for women, it is not good to start crying all over the place and playing into those misogynistic stereotypes.

88. I'm a guy, and supporting Obama. And I teared up reading about the Dr's greeting.
Course, I also teared up watching the dipdive.com "yes we can" video this morning. And while watching Caroline and Ted Kennedy's endorsements of Sen Obama.

Anyway, being emotionally affected by being greeted so kindly and with such pride by a respected friend is like crying at a wedding. Even hardasses are SUPPOSED to get misty in situations like this.

Let it go. If it sways people to vote for her because she acts like a human being in human situations, so be it. But if it sways people to vote for because her opponent's supporters (and her mortal enemies like Drudge) look like they're unsympathetic or mocking a response anybody might have...well, that's not too good at all.

ps this is my first 'starred' post =) I figured if i could open the ol' flea-bitten wallet to donate to Sen Obama today, I could donate to the site which helped me make that decision, too.

peace.

114. Please, watch the video. She did not cry. This is making me angry.
CNN's bias is baiting for Obama supporters to bash Hillary. The bias is so obvious, it's irritating. On the front page it says "Clinton tears up again" and then the comments allowed are only pro Obama, no matter how ridiculous.

First, if you watch the video, she did not tear up.

Secondly, if Hillary calculates every move, you think she'd be able to know that people would think her crying is a stunt the day before Super Tuesday.

Truly this thing needs to die. There is no story here. Shit like this only generates ill-will on all sides, and worse, its only there because 24 hour news organizations need something to talk about.

Just watch the video people...this is a non-story. Its sort of funny to see the video play on TV and then have them try to make something of it.

119. How hard is it to cry on cue?
I saw the tape of Hillary Clinton on MSNBC a few minutes ago and you can see her eyes get wet. I don't think most politicians would have the ability to cry on cue, if that's what people are thinking, unless maybe Hillary keeps a little vial of onion juice in her pocket. Isn't crying a matter of some degree of acting skill, especially keeping it very subtle the way it looked in this case? I don't see how anyone can argue that it was planned, if that's what they truly believe. And what does it matter, anyway? Anyone who would vote either for or against someone because they cry is not a very serious voter in my opinion.
