Empty seats at Obama rallies
What the M$M doesn't want you to see when it reports on Obama rallies:

Politico has a report suggesting this isn't the only venue to go unfilled. Interesting that the crowd numbers we've been seeing on DU are always simply restating the venues' capacities, when it's clear that those venues aren't getting filled.

5. that's not what i'm saying
I just think it's a bit sad that people have been coming on here saying "OMG! OBAMA HAS THE BIG MO - HE FILLED A 2000000000-SEATER STADIUM TODAY" when actually there have been lots of empty seats.

Maybe he should go for smaller venues.

59. I am glad you mention that this is a MICHELLE OBAMA rally, right? Honestly.
You are one of the newer disrupters.
several of us have your number.

Rude assholes on both sides, trying to split us apart.
Oldest damn trick in the book.
Sadly, many here are falling for the back and forth shitsling.

BUT.

In other areas on DU and elsewhere, we are laughing at you.
Both of our candidates are pretty damn worthy.
You are not.

"bidenista" - yeah right.
You are not worthy of HIM, either.

This remark comes from Politico.com. Under that photo, many people have responded that the empty seats were during the Super Bowl, at a site where Obama was never scheduled to speak, and where it was publicized only 2 days before.

Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 02:15 PM by FLDem5
"But while Obama has held some very large rallies in some very small cities -- 14,000 in Boise! -- there have also been quite a few empty seats at some of the bigger venues. (It takes, of course, a certain amount of confidence to stage an event in a huge arena. You won't shut anyone out, but you run the risk of being annoyed by blog items like this one. Obama isn't concerned he'll be seen as having smaller crowds, and where there have been head-to-head crowd counts with Clinton, they vastly favor him.)"

Gotta love the post decrying empty seats in mega-venues, necessary because of recent overflow crowds that couldn't be seated. (Where was the Obama appearance that filled two rooms plus still left thousands outside? ah, Denver...

13. The campaign said there were 8000 at Pauley Pavillion
yesterday. Any of us who go to UCLA can tell you it holds 13K. So I'm not seeing how the campaign was lying and, in fact, it's predictable that this happened on super bowl Sunday.

And they are now using huge venues--places that can fit 70K--so they don't have to turn away 10K like they did last week in Denver. Nobody but nobody actually expects 70K to show up.

During work hours? In an area with heavy Republican residency? Were there other important local events going on at the time? Please don't make insinuations like that without context. No, I'm not an Obama supporter, or a Hillary supporter. I'll make up my mind when I cast my vote. Meanwhile, some of their so-called supporters on DU are doing little to promote their candidates with negative inaccurate posts.

This is on the UCLA campus on Super Bowl Sunday. If you live more than 30 miles from the campus you would need to leave 1 1/2 hours before the event to get there and get parked and to the arena. You would then have another hour plus to get home. Driving the West Side of LA is a Bitch! So people would have to miss the game and parties. For me it would have been an all day event based on living 60 miles away.

I guess you should have been at the Obama rally in Minneapolis on Saturday; 21,000 people who anxiously waited in lines many city blocks long, winding through the skyways, etc. It was truly energizing. But oh - there were a few empty seats in the way, way, way-up nosebleed sections - for shame! Oh wait - that's right, due to the number of folks on the floor, the stadium was at capacity and fire inspectors will not allow anyone in past a certain number. There was a waiting list with thousands of people on it for this event.

Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 02:31 PM by NJObamaWoman
let me explain some things. You might see some empty seats because the people who fill them are in the standing area. While at the rally I noticed that there were THOUSANDS of people standing instead of sitting. That is a choice they offer. So while it might look like empty seats...that no one is there but in fact the people who normally would sit there rather stand to be closer to the podium.

51. Could you write a report on the rally?
I'd be interested in hearing your report! :)

77. No problem. I have to do this quick because I have to get to work.
Well I arrived 2 hours before. However I found out I had to pay 10 bucks to park. I mean I had 8 dollars and they still wouldn't let me in. After I got the cash I came back around 9:10 to a decent line. After we got on line thats when everyone started to show up. After going pass security they offered us the choice of standing or seating (we decided to sit). It was a weird set up because they made everyone fill up the seats in the back of the podium. Therefore all we could see were the speakers backs (unless you look up at the big screen). It was miserable at times because we have this big old light from the News people shining in our faces. There were many seats that weren't filled but as I said before thats because the people who fill those seats were on the floor standing all around the stage. Then at 11:30-12:00pm NJ leaders came out to talk about why they supported Obama (from Booker, Mayor of Jersey City, Bill Bradley, Codey and a few others). After they left more and more people started to fill the Center. At this point volunteers started to hand our Obama Posters. I forgot who introduced Bobby D. but he came out and greeted the crowd. Then Obama, Ted, Caroline came out which was cool. I was in and out with Obama's speech because I've heard it all. But the crowd was pumped.

I think Obama had a decent turn out but it could have been better for many reasons. 1) It started to flurry. 2) Lot of people in NJ were so consumed with recovering after the Super Bowl 3) Many people were at work and didn't know about this event until the last min 4) Should have held it at the Prudential Center. The Meadowlands is hard to get to. I just don't see many people from Essex, Passaic and Hudson counties driving over there to see Barack on a work day (monday at that). All and all I had a good time. Honestly I'm glad I went but I could have stayed home because I've already heard Barack's speech before. But it was a cool experience because I got to see tons of children witnessing history, there are ALL races & genders there, and finally I continue to see what Obama has been talking about in terms of his appeal of Repubs and Independents. He can get them, I believe that even now because I was standing in back from a group of proud Repubs who support Obama.

Oh and by the way Chelsea's was at the Tick Tock Diner during the rally to encourage votes for her Mom.

71. Pitiful. Are you THAT desperate?
I mean, really - you should watch the video of Maria's speech, it was very good. I'm surprised they got that many people at a quickly put together rally, at which Maria Shriver wasn't even expected to speak, on Superbowl Sunday.

Your desperation is really, really sad.
