If we had Universal Health Care what would you have fixed that you can't fix now? |
|
Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 11:09 PM by Quixote1818
Health Care is a big issue with me because I blew out my knee and have been living without an ACL for several years now. At the time I didn't have any insurance because the Company I work for didn't cover employees that lived out of state. Of course I was the only person in another state. I decided to buy HC two years ago on my own.
I would LOVE to have UHC so I could get my knee all fixed up and be able to play basketball and ski again!
What would you do to take care of yourself if you had paid health care?
PS. This is how Dems need to sell this. By getting people thinking about how they could take care of themselves if they had Universal HC.

1. The healthcare system in this country is a disaster..trust me, I've worked in the system. |
|
It's terribly broken...For a pround industrialized nation who is out the democracizing other countries ...we should be ashamed.

2. Universal Health care is not "free", BTW... |
|
but UHC was offered, I would not skip going to the doctor the next time I have an ear infection.. because right now I know my current insurance won't bother to pay.

9. And its not just going to the doc |
|
that is expensive... after you go see your doctor, you still have to pay for your scrips! That's where the BIG bucks can really come in!

4. we have UHC in Australia but you pay for it every week via your |
|
taxes-in very small amounts. And as everyone pays it adds up to a fortune so everyone can get treated. It's the only fair way and the big drug companies hate it to pieces. The government also negotiates with drug companies to purchase massive amounts of drugs at cut rates-another reason US drug companies finance politicians who oppose UHC.
Most of Europe has universal health care and it works.

8. Nope. I messed up my knee |
|
in Germany skateboarding and it got fixed for FREE!
I also had a health prob in Canada once and they took really good care of me... anyone who tries to say that in a UHC system you have to wait on a waiting list needs to go to either Germany or Canada, and then visit their local Emergency Room. Its not UHC that sucks, ITS OUR CURRENT SYSTEM that sucks!

6. People will buy it if it's made affordable |

You can't end homelessness by mandating everybody to buy a house.

12. I don't agree. Universal coverage is absolutely essential to me. |
|
But I also respect and appreciate that you feel differently.

I can't "fix" that or my Fibromyalgia, but I could afford medicine and regular doctor's visits... and I wouldn't be in fear of being dropped by my insurance at any mo. I also wouldn't be afraid of if in the future I have to have a BMT or chemo again, that we won't be able to afford it.
I don't understand why more people aren't behind UHC.

You have health care at the moment. Hillary's not giving you anything else.

14. For you, and for the OP, he's proposing the exact same thing Hillary is. The only people |
|
Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 11:38 PM by Occam Bandage
for whom it is different are those who do not want to purchase health care; Hillary attempts to force them to, while Obama does not.
For both, if you have coverage, they will probably make it a bit cheaper. That's it.

17. I just don't think his proposal is tenable. I have looked, I don't dismiss it out of hand. |
|
For me, you don't get closer to your goal by taking ten steps backwards at the starting line.
So, we disagree. That's all. No biggie.

15. I would hope to beable to pay for other things since I wouldn't have |
|
to payas much asis taken out of my current paycheck. I know HC is nt free, but I doub it is as expensive as we are all paying now if everybody is in the system.

19. Wellness checkups, to catch things before they get out of hand. |
|
Things like mammograms, bone scans, blood tests, cardiograms, all the tests that are so prohibitively expensive that people end up dying because they can't even afford the tests and then one day it's too late to do anything about it. People are afraid if something is wrong, they won't be able to pay for treatment. So they try to pretend the problem doesn't exist. People make choices between going for tests and feeding their kids decent food, or paying for heat in their house.
There are so many conditions that if caught relatively early, are much less expensive to treat.
