Potential Trouble For Obama In New York |
|
I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this today, so forgive me if I'm just repeating something. But I just came from voting and I was surprise that when I went to the voting booth, Clinton's name was the first one on the ballot and there were no other names next to hers?
I mean, there were names, but none you could vote for.
It went:
Clinton Kucinich Richardson Biden Dodd Obama
and then way down at the bottom was Obama.
I don't know if that's going to mess up his vote or not, but I had to actually search for him before I found his name and the row I could flip the little switches for him.
It's probably more an annoyance than anything else. But I wonder why Clinton was the first name on the ballot, even before Biden. Why didn't they just move Obama and Clintons' names and spots together to make it easier for people?
Just something to keep in mind for the results later on tonight. Anyone else in NY notice the same thing?

That Hillary is sure a busy woman, what with rigging all the elections and selling us out to the Republicans it's a wonder she finds time for eating babies. Maybe I should have voted for her - sounds like she gets things done! /feeble_attempt_at_humor
Seriously, the order of names is probably random. There have been studies that indicate whoever's in the first slot gets ~2% more votes just from position. In my state, the names are in different order in each district to try and prevent someone from getting this kind of bump statewide.
BTW, Clinton was last on my ballot.

33. You're wrong when you are talking about mechanical lever machines |
|
The point was that Clinton's name was alone and it was clear which lever to pull. The other names, however, were apparently hard to align with the proper lever. (See my post about my son's complaint, below--he had a lot of trouble and he is quite intelligent and patient).

Obama had the top spot (and it had lots of the candidates that have dropped out of the race). Hillary is in the middle. All and all it was pretty easy to find who you were looking for.

Top of the ballot is worth 3-5 points for a down ballot position. I'm pretty sure that for president people know who they want.

42. Each county in Texas has a "draw" for ballot order ... |
|
since each county is responsible for it's own ballot creating.
That is, someone (a candidate's volunteer or an election person if no volunteer shows up) draws numbers from a 'hat' to determine ballot order.

20. Bottom is second best to top - any other position would hurt him - at least that is what |
|
they said about positioning way back in my youth.
Bottom or top is a 2 to 3% gain compared to middle - with top getting a very slight edge
Most states rotate by precinct because of this - I thought NY rotated - but in this case it would make more sense to not rotate given only 2 contenders.
A NY election law person is needed to get you a real answer (my reply about past memories of the rules is worth little).

21. My son called to report the same thing |
|
It was his first time voting in New York (he moved there this fall for graduate school). Here was his experience:
His polling place was listed in an adjacent apartment building. He went to the front lobby, but could find no signs nor anyone there. He decided to go to the rear of the building and, indeed, found a sign ... but he couldn't open the door! Finally, as one last try, he decided to return to his own building, go down to the laundry room, and enter the other building from there: he finally found the polling place!
He was a little shocked at having to vote on an old lever machine. He said that he considers himself fairly capable (he was a National Merit Scholar, graduated with honors in math and physics, and is a theoretical mathematics student) ... but he found it confusing! It was hard to tell if he was pushing the right levers he said ... except that Clinton's lever was standing all alone on the left (I think). So your story is confirmed ... he had to triple check to figure out if he had punched a lever for Obama (it was unclear, he said, as to whether it might be Edwards's).

Jesus Christ. :eyes:
For the record, if O. wins it will be because he won and not because he did anything illegal or unethical. So I just want to be clear in advance that I will not be looking for excuses if my candidate loses.

40. I voted in CT and accordiing to the news here |
|
the names were sorted randomly to come up with the order. It so happens that here Obama's name is first and Hillary's is near the bottom. (I think she was next to last). I thought this was how it was done in most places. I don't see anything diabolical or evil. I voted for Hillary. I looked for her name and marked it accordingly. My eyesight isn't all that great but I would have trouble mixing up "Barrack Obama" with "Hillary Clinton."
