20. In regard to Giuliani |
|
He lost Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx and Brooklyn twice. It was Staten Island that went overwhelmingly for Giuliani.

8. Yep--I think both became Repubs out of political convenience. |
|
Rudy is now barely a Repub, and Bloomberg is an Indie.

17. STOP THAT! he switched after the stolen election - that makes him GOP enough! |
|
He invited RNC in NYC, ordered spying on activists, arrests, kept the park from us - when will the whitewashing of this creep ever stop? he was as much of a dem as Theresa LePore was!

3. I don't know, but New York republicans are different from the rest of the country, for the most part |
|
They tend to be socially liberal but fiscally conservative.

5. It would seem quite befuddling... |

but as a NYer, you should see some of the knuckleheads the Dems have put up to run for mayor. Geesh. It's not that we lost, we just didn't deserve the job.

The infighting is so nasty we wind up with the worst possible candidates.

And keep all the facets of power out of the hands of one party.

13. DC 37 supported Giuliani in 97 and Bloomberg in 05 |
|
That's 1/3 of the city's municipal unions.
Bloomberg would be a moderate Dem in the rest of the country.
White Dems weren't too keen on Freddy Ferrer in 2005.
No one was really keen on Mark Green in 2001.
The Crown Heights riots sank David Dinkins (a fine man and a much better Mayor than people gave him credit for) in 1993.
Messinger was a weak, under-financed candidate in 1997.
NY Republicans are mostly moderate Dems and are hated by the Bush White House because they sometimes get union support.

14. They have the media. people who come out to protest, don't show up to vote |
|
Bloomberg pretty much won by default (+ some dirty tricks by Sharpton in 2001) Rudy rode the over the top backlash against Dinkins after some racial incidents in Crown Hights - then took credit for what Dinkins dod (lower the crime by adding cops in the street).

19. RW DEMS peel off and support the GOP. |
|
NYS DEMS are way to the right of the nat'l party. The state convention actually *defeated* a motion calling for Iraq withdrawal in '06.
A myriad of RW DEMS have been successful in NY: Koch , Moynihan, Schumer, Clinton. Hawkish foreign policy is key.
Has to do with demographics and income.
