Delegate selection in NY
Someone just sent me this. It's informative.

Let me try to give an simple answer to what is sometimes a complex question regarding the delegates.

1. The vote that matters the most is the vote for the presidential candidate. You could say that the only vote that matters is the vote for the presidential candidate.

2. The percentage of votes received by the presidential candidate determines how many delegates a candidate will receive in a Congressional District.

3. The number of votes received by the delegates determines which delegates will go to the convention on behalf of the candidate.

4. The number of votes received by a candidate’s delegates has no impact on the number of delegates that a candidate receives.

Here are some scenarios, thought I admit they are improbable scenarios used only to illustrate a point:

· A person votes for Barack and does not vote for any delegates. The vote counts for Barack and the lack of votes for delegates has no impact on the number delegates that Barack receives.

· A person could vote for Barack and all of Hillary’s delegates. The vote counts for Barack and the lack of votes for Barack delegates has no impact on the number delegates that Barack receives.

· A person could vote for Hillary and the vote for Barack’s delegates. The vote counts for Hillary and the votes for Barack’s delegates only add to the delegate total. Barack receives nor benefit.

How does the delegate total work? (Watch out, Byzantine rules ahead).

The delegates for each candidate are competing with each other for a spot at the convention. Unless a candidate wins all the delegates in a Congressional District, the delegate totals determine who goes and who stay s home. The delegate with the most votes goes first, and then it alternates by gender.

Let’s say that Barack receive enough votes to earn two delegates in a five delegate district. He’s how it will work:

Barack gets his two delegates.

The delegate with the most votes goes to the convention.

If that delegate was a female, then the second delegate is the male with the highest total.

If Barack received enough votes for three delegates, then the third delegate in that case would be the female delegate with the next highest amount of votes among the female delegate candidates.

What matters most is that a person votes for Barack.

1. Thank you - I've been trying to figure this out for months now.
My guess is that Hillary and Obama will end up splitting the New York Delegation 50/50.

3. Obama can leave NY with about 20-30 less delegates
if he gets over the 40% threshold in most of the districts and in the overall popular vote.
