13. I think Obama pulled it off...not truly sure yet
I am happy because as a black woman, I am witnessing history. You may not understand and that's fine..

I have seen, lived and through much...and have heard horrific stories from my elders about the treatment they received in this country...

TO SEE THIS MOMENT IS JUST UNFUCKING BELIEVABLE..

I'm not prejudice.

I don't hate but I am overjoyed...

Truly overjoyed that this nation has grown the way that it has...

Even if he doesn't win..it shows how far we've come..

Hope that explains it..

Great outlook.

Reminds me of the sadness I occasionally feel thinking that Molly Ivins didn't get to hang around to see the total disintegration of Bush, Rove and the Republican Party... and how much she would have enjoyed this election.

28. I choked-up at "I have seen, lived and..."
Gotta agree.

I'm voting for Obama because of an issues gap between the two, but, as a side benefit, I'd love to win in November with Obama because I feel a black man winning the Presidency would effectively break the glass ceiling for both our candidates' demographics... women and minorities.

I hear your joy, and am happy for you -- and pleasantly pleased that I can feel moderately less ashamed of my country. The exit polls may indicate that we're not wholly free of racism and sexism, but we've definitely come a long way, baby, considering where we were less than 45 years ago.

Edited on Tue Feb-05-08 11:12 PM by kath
sorry to piss in your cornflakes. But I really HATE government of the corporation, by the corporation, and for the corporation...

I'm old enough to remember when the Democratic party stood up for working people and the poor and downtrodden. Plus both of my grandfathers were union organizers back in the 30s and 40s, so of course were staunch Democrats.

38. Ah, yes, the "real Democrat" meme ...
Edited on Tue Feb-05-08 11:22 PM by RoyGBiv
Here's the other thing.

Neither one person nor one faction defines what is a "real Democrat." Christians play this game all the time, and it's not resulted in much utility there either.

The Democratic party is, today, with our two major Presidential candidates at the helm, more "progressive" than it was in those mythical good-old-days when supposedly Democrats stood for the working man -- working man if he was a he and if he was white, you mean. Progressivism for whites only was the rallying cry uttered in hushed tones where that wasn't all that much of a concern and through a loudspeaker where it got votes.

58. granted, things have changed, but at least back then the Dems were not controlled by big
corporations. Clinton and Obama are not progressives. Jeebus, this country has moved so far to the right over the past 40-50 years that both of them are to the right of Richard Nixon. No way in hell would someone like FDR have even a ghost of a chance. Sickening. (and as a Yurpeen posted here the other day, Kucinich would be considered a mainstream candidate in most Yurpeen countries, but here he's branded as a far-left-wing kook).

70. But that's not true ...
Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 12:05 AM by RoyGBiv
Not as stated.

Corporations as they exist today did not exist "back in the day," but those that did had politicians from both parties firmly in their pockets.

The legal fiction of corporate personhood has not been seriously challenged by either of the major parties at any time in this nation's history, and both parties have strongly benefited from corporate influence, much to the detriment of the individual.

I share your concern about corporate influence, but I cannot throw our candidates to the wind because of it. No *President* is going to roll back corporate personhood to any significant degree. They don't have the power, not if they hold themselves within their Constitutional authority, and more than a century of case law exists that must be addressed. The best one can hope for at the moment is the appointment of an AG that enforces regulation and a Congress that seeks to enact more of those regulations for the AG to enforce. Beyond that, we look for SCOTUS nominees that might put a break on this thing, but even there, you're not looking at one Presidency. You're looking at a half century of it at least.

Or ... a total meltdown of society that forces drastic change. One or the other.
