Obama vs. McCain = united left/independents vs. fractured moderate conservatives |

Hardcore religious conservatives will stay home. Obama will unite the left and will probably split the indies with McCain. In contrast, McCain won't be able to unite the right, and will only appeal to moderate conservatives. The Limbaugh-Dobson crowd will sit out the election in protest. Obama wins big.
However, nominate Hillary, and you'll get a lot of prejudiced conservatives who hate anything Clinton.

I think the GOP will take the South and some mid-Western states with lots of fundamentalists.
Whoever wins the Dem nomination will have a hard fought battle IMO.

the moderate repubs will vote for mccain along with a lot of conservative repugs. mccain will also peel off a fair amount of moderate/conservative/southern democrats
