10. Your ping pong attack of a hack isn't going to cut it. Care to remove the libelous statement?
Or do Hill suppoters like to falsely slander their betters?

3. And she got it from the Hopi tribe
Maria Shriver credited them when she used the phrase the other day.

13. Some are pure Obama haters
Sour grapes over Biden and Edwards because he got what was rightfully theirs, or some convoluted reasoning that I can't follow. I don't think it's fair to dump ALL the hate on Hillary.

8. It's called citation
And it's been part of the African American rhetorical and literary tradition for 400 years.

Don't be a skootch.

12. It's not academic citation, silly
Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 02:42 AM by alcibiades_mystery
It's cultural citation.

Listen, if you knew anything about African American rhetorical traditions, you'd know that this is part and parcel of the culture. The reason you don't need to "cite your sources" is because everyone in the fucking audience knows what you're referring to. It's like saying that anyone who uses "our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor" is plagiarizing Thomas Jefferson if they don't cite that as coming from the Declaration of Independence. Everyone knows but know-nothing white folks who scream "plagiarism." These are the same people who think, for example, that Mos Def and Talib Kweli were "plagiarizing" Slick Rick when they did their own riff on "A Children's Story." It's part of the tradition: you acknowledge those who came before you by citing them. If you do it with clever transformations, that's even better. Read Ishmael Reed, fer chrissakes. Look at this very obvious version from hip hop culture:

I'm the R, the A, to the K-I-M
If I wasn't, then why would I say I am?
- Rakim, The Rhyme Gets Rougher

I am whatever you say I am
If I wasn't, then why would I say I am?
Eminem, The Way I Am

I'm the N, the A, to the S-A-R
If I wasn't, I must've been Escobar
-Nas, Got Ur Self a Gun

It's the same principle, but you find it in the literature going back at least a century. Neither Eminem nor Nas "cited their source." Why? Because only know-nothing motherfuckers don't know who they're referring to. It's only "plagiarism" if you're NOT supposed to get the reference. If you ARE supposed to get the reference, it's citation, whether you "cite your source" or not.
