Extent of student support for Obama called atypical (OWH)

LINCOLN — One of the tightest presidential primary battles in recent American history is a blowout in John Hibbing's honors political science class at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Most of the male students in the class support Barack Obama for president. Most of the female students do, too.

Ditto for the liberals, moderates and some of the conservatives.

Hibbing, a longtime UNL professor, has researched voting patterns for decades and co-authored several books about political behavior.

He's never seen anything quite like this.

"Students' general perception is that politicians are a bunch of middle-age people who don't speak to them," he said.

"But Obama does. This isn't typical."

Atypical is a good way to describe the excitement among college students that is helping to propel Obama's candidacy for the Democratic nomination.

Young voters, long the hardest-to-reach group for politicians, have turned out for the Illinois senator in large numbers in many of the early primaries.

4. I'm Cacusing for him in Omaha on Sat.. and taking 12 others with me!
I have not yet found anyone who plans on caucusing for Hillary - she is NOT liked in this red state at all. I'm sure she'll get some votes... but I'm thinking our 25 delegates will mostly be going to Barack.

7. Outside the precinct I went to - all kinds of teens holding signs for
Obama, shouting at the cars, people honking back. May not have been quite old enough to vote. Some came in to watch the caucus. Half female, half male. Roughly. Obviously, not in the 'burbs.

Suburbs.

that the latin american vote in chicago is looking like a split between the old-clinton and the young-obama. they were wondering why the results in la or any other latin community would`t be the same.

i think the kids are willing to give obama a chance and the old folks are comfortable with hillary. it`s their future and the future of this party.
