Hillary Campaign: We Stopped Obama's Momentum Dead

By Greg Sargent - February 6, 2008, 11:07AM
The story-line the Hillary campaign needed out of last night's results is that they halted Obama's momentum, and on a conference call with reporters just now, Hillary advisers sought to make the case that they had done just that.

Hillary pollster Mark Penn repeatedly cited last night's exit polls showing that Hillary won among voters who made up their minds on the last day -- proof, he said, that they'd blocked Obama's weekend surge. He downplayed the breakdown among those who decided in the last few days.

Hillary advisers also disputed the Obama camp's claim of a lead among delegates, arguing that they were ahead when you factor in superdelegates.

They also moved to frame the results of the coming week in advance, laying the groundwork for possible losses this week in Louisiana, Nebraska, and Washington state by arguing that no matter who wins these contests, the delegate apportioning process all but guarantees that the delegate race will remain super tight for the foreseeable future.

"As we get farther into this, it is less and less likely that either side will be able to amass a large delegate lead," Wolfson said. "For all those who wish for a battle that goes to the convention, in terms of neither side wrapping this up, you could be looking at such a contest here."

Bottom line: Yesterday's results signal that this thing won't be decided by the conventional electoral process, and it will grind on and on for weeks to come.

"We Stopped Obama's Momentum Dead"

LOL!

1. If Super Tuesday had been one week later, Obama would have swept most states.
The only possible exceptions would be NY and Mass.

California's huge number of early votes also complicated matters.

2. What bullshit! They didn't stop anything. Obama's goal was to break even and it happened.
The surge will continue despite any kind of spin the Clinton campaign can throw at it.

5. Yes, McCain does have a chance at beating Obama.
But he's a damn sure certainty to be Hillary.

7. i know what the problem with you obama folks are: all you want
to do is win the nomination....that will be enough to make you all happy....I never sense a 100% dedication that obama folks say they will win....it is always something that will stop them....

unlike us hrc supporters, we believe she can beat obama...we believe she can win against any republican....that is the damn difference.....

10. That;s absurd. Obama supporters have LONG made
the argument that she's much likely a loser in the general, and that he stands a far, far, far better chance of winning against the repukes. You guys are so pathetically desperate you twist everything. Sad sacks.

9. I find this an odd characterization. These people are obviously tired. They need to take a rest.
Obama has only just begun to find his groove, and he does make sure he gets his rest; it's obvious.

12. Listening to NPR; Daschle now a co-chair of the Obama campaign.
Well, that's good. He knows how it feels to be bush-wacked, swift-boated. He can keep a look out for the continued dirty tricks sure to come, so that Obama can stay focused on the issues.

14. Ann Lewis saying Obama has never had the experience of facing a well-financed opposition
Is that supposed to be a veiled threat? I can't believe these people. Plus, Obama cannot be intimidated. Nor will Kerry, nor will Kennedy, nor will Daschle.

21. And Ann Lewis saying we'll find a way to pull in the Florida and Michigan delegates
because they are such important states to winning in the general, and Hillary won in both.

I am just shaking my head over the level of desperation, but my word, I guess Lewis is s'pozed to get out the word that HRC will have "establishment" Democrats (like super-delegates) on her side to get this done?

Yes, indeed, they really are desperate to shut down the Obama machine. And they are becoming blind out of fear, I think.

Just to put it out there where I am coming from, I only "decided" to vote for Obama after I heard Kerry's endorsement speech. ttp://www.johnkerry.com/ Comments by HRC and her surrogates days before this happened were really starting to concern me, and then he said it all, oh, so eloquently and so wisely, having been the victim of swiftboating, having finally realized why you have to fight back. No matter how insidious, it's against everything this Party is supposed to stand for.

24. last I checked MI and FL were part of the US
and the people there deserve as much say in this process as people in Missouri.

The fact that their political leadership in those states got caught up in BS pissing contests with the national party doesn't change that one bit.

28. agreed. sitting delegates based on sham primaries
isn't going to do any good. Leaving them out ain't the answer, either.

Nonetheless, Hillary's support in FL is real and should not be ignored.

23. I have to say, I'm surprised Hillary came out so far ahead of Obama in California
I wonder what happened to Obama's surge there? I really expected it was going to be tight with only a 2 to 3 point difference.
