The Rude Pundit - In Brief: Obama Won
Even before the latest presumptive count of states and delegates came in, it was pretty damn clear that Barack Obama won last night. It wasn't even close, despite the close numbers. Remember: just a month ago, Clinton was up by ten to twenty points nationally. For last night to have been anything less than a Clinton blow-out means she lost. For her to have to keep fighting at this point means she lost. And for it to have been, more or less, a tie (with Obama winning slightly more delegates and lots more states), well, that means Clinton lost big time.

Sure, we could go over figures and demographics, and others will, but, at the end of the day, Obama was not supposed to be this strong at this point. Political campaigns are built on narratives. There is a simple story that needs to connect with the voters. Obama's narrative has more or less stayed on track since his campaign started. Clinton's has veered this way and that way, like some exquisite corpse constructed at Bedlam. It was supposed to be easy for her: presumptive leader leads into the convention. Now that she has had to change her narrative time and again means she is losing. And Obama is winning.

And the rudest thing that this blog can say today is this: Clinton needs to think of a classy exit strategy before this election not only rips apart the party for now, and for the future. More on that later.

(Good liberal caveat: Unlike the nutzoid Republicans who are flipping out over McCain, if Clinton does manage to become the nominee, this blog will support her like control top panty hose. Besides, either way, beating up on McCain's gonna be fun.)

2. It's nice being the underdog.
I'm reminded of Malcolm Wallace of "Braveheart"--right at the beginning where a young William hears his father talking to the other landowners about the English:

"Ach, we don't have to beat 'em! Just fight them."

3. What an ignorant thing to say
Because Obama did well, and in Rude's estimation better than Clinton, she should drop out or risk ripping the party apart?

Ignorant. Dumb. Stupid.

In a way it shows good sense, to copy something that works well...but there is a certain pathetic quality to it.

12. That was a pretty classless thing to do.
You would think that the Hillary camp would have spent some of their time over the last 8 years leading up to this campaign to come up with their own slogans.

The Clinton campaign seems to be having trouble.

Maybe being the presumed Dem candidate a year ago made them think they had this thing all sewed up.

36. Using young people for "her" backdrop the day after
Obama's first upset win in Iowa.

*Stealing John Edwards "Its personal for me" the day after that line worked so well during the debates.

There is NOTHING creative, original, or sincere about the Hillary campaign.

6. nonsense statements
have you been asleep the past several weeks? if not, then why the nonsense statement that obama was not supposed to be this strong at this point? he came in first in iowa, maybe your comments would have been appropriate then.

obama was clearly NOT the winner last night

Hillary Clinton won major important states on both east and west coasts, and in the north and south

She had critical victories

Obama will probably win the next upcoming primaries, but Hillary Clinton will win Ohio and Washington and Texas

those are also crucial states....Hillary will win the nomination, and it would be great to have Obama on the ticket

10. Virtually no one think this thing will be settle before PA
Howard Dean certainly doesn't. And much can change in the month leading up to TX and OH. Furthermore, there's absolutely no guarantee that Hill will win WA. It's a caucus state and he has obvious strengths in that format. He'll also have greater momentum going into the big states- and more delegates.

20. Why assume Hillary would win EITHER Ohio, OR WA state -- doesn't Obama lead in the latter?
Given the advances Obama has made, just since winning in S Carolina, it is amazing. Only some kind of reversal or blunder, or MSM feeding frenzy is apt to stop Obama from getting the nomination at this point

(not to suggest that those aren't serious possibilities)

Here's my narrative analysis:

but it wasn't so long ago that Hillary people were brandishing poll results that proved that Clinton had unstoppable 20 point leads all over the country.

When a candidate begins looking weak their "safe" territory becomes vulnerable.

Sometimes I can't tell but anyone that thinks the rude one is a stealth republican is clearly not paying attention. I can't believe people around here haven't actually heard of him. I think he should be required reading.

His 42 ways he would not fuck Ann Coulter is borderline performance art genius. And no, I am not the rude pundit he would say far more complimentary things about himself.

Clinton won big, crucial states

California was plum, so was New Jersey, so, too, Massachusetts

Clinton clobbered Obama

it's only because of the questionalble way the Dems divide up delegates that Obama can make any claims

but the reality is: Clinton won last night

Everyone knows the main attraction goes on last.

Momentum is the key and Obama has it. If the Clinton supporters were smart they would be pushing for the rest of the primaries to be held ASAP and to get people to send in their absentee ballots ASAP.

Time and turnout are the enemies of the Clinton campaign and friends of the Obama campaign.

they will rip the party apart trying to finagle enough delegates to get the nomination (read Florida). If they lose, they will leave a disaster in their wake. It's called the scorched earth policy. Political power is everything to the dynamic duo and they will stop at almost nothing to obtain it.

Clinton got beat in every sense of the word. Plain and simple. Obama just wanted to be within 70... And he ends up with the lead. The lead in total states won and delegates.

If it had happened the other way around, they would be hooting and hollering and rubbing our noses in it.

So, I guess I got what I expected.

42. Spot On . . . Clinton is not surging foward . . .
she is sinking like a stone.

According to the SF Gate, Clinton, who had a 20 point lead in California for most of the year, "had a narrow edge, 49 percent to 46 percent, with those who made up their minds in the last three days, but held a 17-point advantage among voters who had decided earlier."

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/02/06/BA3IUT6L8.DTL&feed=rss.news

That is a TERRIBLE trend line the Clinton camp. It appears that, the more people see of Hillary Clinton, the less they like her.

Anything less than a landslide victory for Clinton in California HAS TO BE seen as a victory for Obama.

I observed the same thing about her speaking style in the LA debates. She wandered all over the place until she found something that the audience responded to, then she'd hammer on that.
