Long live Democracy ... and ... DONATE NOW!
Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 01:53 PM by Angela Shelley
If I remember reading correctly, we are in a recession, and just a few weeks ago, the message boards were full of related threads.

I was beginning to think that the majority of the people in this country were living from paycheck to paycheck, worrying about their ability to make their house and car payments, scraping to buy prescription drugs, wondering where their money has gone, living on mac and cheese, moving out of their apartments and into their cars ...

and then I read the messages today and see that there is more than enough money to go around.

Everyone and their dog is sending money to support "their" Superstar, I mean, Candidate to make sure that their vote counts.

Long live democracy!

1. I have no money to give
But that's normal. I'm one of those DUers that doesn't have net access if my boss weren't so nice.

Beyond that, though, we're actually in a depression, but most people don't know it yet due to gov't and fed reserve smoke and mirrors.

2. Hello Hydra,
well, think of this way ...

1) You have a nice boss, which is not something everyone else can enjoy.

2) Maybe there´s enough room in the Depression Boat for all of us?

:toast:

3. Haha
I've been waiting for everyone to join me here at the bottom, cuz their's no way back up unless you have a patron.

When almost everyone is here at the bottom, there will be very little we disagree about, I think.

As for me having a nice boss, it goes both ways. He won't pay me a decent wage, but he lets me have internet. The world is full of tradeoffs. The upside is that DU has to put up with me ranting about the economy all the time

4. Don´t hold your breath and wait for common ground ...
Some people will disagree about the time of day, even if they are at the bottom.

Keep on ranting! ... and Get back to work! ... the economy needs YOU!:applause:

5. Ha!
The economy exists in people's dreams now.

I am worried about the non-common ground, though. I can picture some starving woman coming up to me after she leaves her church telling me that abortion, gays and various other "sins" are what's making us poor.

No, that would be those megolomaniac "elite" screwing you, lady.

6. So where are all of the "generous campaign donations"
coming from?

Do you suppose that people are making campaign contributions with borrowed money (credit cards)?

7. I dunno
I avoided the credit trap. I may not always have eaten regularly, but the only thing I have on loan is my car(because paying $300-400 regularly to get my old car fixed was just as bad and not as predictable).

I really wonder where all of this donation money is coming from...but given many of the threads I've seen about how free trade works and how the poor are to blame for their poverty here, I suspect most DUers are well off, well educated and not feeling the crunch yet. I suspect many of the lurkers comprise the other category that includes me.

Honestly, I see the donations as a waste. Hillary and Obama have very similar platforms, and since the result is pretty much the same, I would be focusing more on the general election.

8. In agreement!
I also choose to pay the bills on time, which doesn´t leave extras for the democratic process.

Maybe I should start saving for the next election?

9. What next election?
We might not even have this one- an economic or military "crisis" sounds more plausible by the day.

10. Oooh, your level of optimism is showing ...
So what are you doing to prepare for the "downturn"?

Got goats and a garden? Got gold reserves in the basement?

11. Nothing I can do
Not really worried about it, though. The US can screw with you anywhere in the world. Just ask the Iraqis.

I have a disabled relative I'm taking care of anyway, so all I can really do is pound pavement and educate open-minded people about the banks and the mortgage crisis. I'll probably go the way of the White Rose...but in the end, resistance is futile.

12. I`m open-minded and am willing to learn
Who or what do you think is the "source" of this current crisis?

14. I watched the video "Money Changers"
and had a couple of sleepless nights.

The "Fractional Reserve Banking" thing is still somewhat confusing.

15. Ok, so you have an idea
Watch money as debt- google has it. Fractional reserve meant that they could on;y loan out a specified amount of money, say 10x what they have in deposit. That isn't the case anymore. They can loan with no backing now.

Given that banks make a 100% profit when they loan(that money didn't even exist), why would they create these ARMs...and why would so many of them come due at the same time?

My guess so far is THAT is what all of this is about. Deliberate created crisis for the purpose of bulldozing laws. They did that with terrorism and war- the citizens of the US find out that we torture, and very few even blink.

Having a dictatorship isn't hard- what's hard is keeping the population under control. I think this is all being done to introduce us to dictatorship/oligarchy to see if we'll fight back. My guess is no.

I'm not certain though- I keep watching hoping to see the pattern emerge. All I know is that none of this is an accident...which would keep me up nights, if I could afford not to sleep
