Obama did it. Clinton couldn't.
Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 03:41 PM by cali
Obama beat Hillary in her own backyard in the tri-state area. NJ, CT and NY are so closely bound together that that's how they're referred to locally. You may not like it, but that's a coup for him and one she couldn't replicate in the midwest. In addition he beat her by a much larger margin in Illinois than she beat him in NY. And that was with the massive advertising she had to do in her own state. He ran no advertising in Illinois. And don't expect her to have a strong showing in the next round of Northeastern/Eastern states either. Maine is a caucus state. He'll take MD, DC and VA. He'll sweep her in Vermont. She may win in RI, but I wouldn't bank on it. Obama could well take 3 of the 6 New England states. She's not likely to do well in the remainder of the midwest.

9. My point is
she didn't.

I got one mailer --all it said was how the primary was on the 2/5.

But I get things from Hillary all the time, as I'm on her mailing list.

20. are you certain of that?
I think you'll find that she did advertise in New York in an effort to keep Obama under 40% there.
She failed.

10. EJ Dionne reported it last night
on NPR. He said that she spent heavily on ads in NY. And of course he advertised there. He did not advertise in Illinois. At all.

4. he beat her by 2% here in CT, and lost NJ and NY
how does that translate in "Obama beat Hillary in her own backyard in the tri-state area"?

"He'll take MD, DC and VA. He'll sweep her in Vermont"

can you predict tomorrow's lottery numbers too?

12. She lost Missouri and Kansas
He won CT. Very simple. And actually he won by 3 points in CT- for whatever that's worth. And no need for a crystal ball to see what will happen in DC- it's heavily African American. You can't seriously mean to tell me that she can compete there? MD also has a large AA community, and as we've clearly seen the AA community is coming out in big numbers to vote for him. As for Vermont, yeah I know what's going on in my own state. She's raised a paltry $47,000 here. He's raised almost 10x that here; more per capita than any other state. He'll win by at least 20 points here. And Vermont's most popular politician's endorsement actually does carry quite a bit of weight. People here listen to Pat Leahy.

5. Did you leave off the silly emoticon?
Obama only won Connecticut; he didn't beat her in her own backyard.

13. CT is in her backyard, genius
And she couldn't do the same in midwestern states. Close but no cigar.

14. If this was winner take all ( like in the presidential election)
it would be over!!!

You might as well be boasting about winning Alaska and Utah. How about Idaho.

She won the big states. you know like the ones that Dems can actually carry in the GE.

End of story.

On a lighter note: Edwards kicked Giuliani's butt !!

I've been trying to determine what kind of person votes for Obama. I think it's quite interesting how, with a couple exceptions, O won democrats in traditional Republican leaning areas. I wonder what that means.

I spent a lot of time on assignments in Boston, RI, and DC. I grew up in CT. The people I know in CT are idealists. They have a strong affinity for underdogs. They respond to message like O's - a higher calling. Boston is very different. People there seem a little jaded. I think maybe Kennedy and Kerry made a mistake in not campaigning through MA. My friend in Boston didn't even know O was coming until the next day. Hell, people in MA might not of even know Ted and John were supporting him unless they watch C-SPAN. As for RI - I think the people there are closer to CT than to the Boston mentality. If he went there - P-town and maybe Fall River - it could have a huge impact.

After spending a couple years in DC - there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that O can win DC and MD and if he spends some time in say Charlottesville, Richmond, maybe Roanoke - he'll take VA as well.

I am very optimistic about this!

16. Are you kidding me?
he had every powerful east coast endorsement he could ask for and failed to win the North. I see yesterday different than you, which means Super Tuesday is really up to the eye of the beholder. I saw it like Clinton did and Obama didn't...why was why chris matthews was so somber last night.
