Dean: calls for "an arrangement"..."I don’t think we can afford to have a brokered convention"
Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 04:50 PM by jefferson_dem
Transcript of Dean Interview on NY1’s “Inside City Hall”I

In a Super Tuesday interview on “Inside City Hall,” Democratic Chairman Howard Dean said he doesn’t want the Clinton-Obama race continuing into the party’s convention in Denver, saying the candidates should “make some kind of an arrangement” if neither has enough delegates to win the nomination.

Speaking to political anchor Dominic Carter before Tuesday’s results were known, Dean predicted the Democrats would “have a nominee sometime in the middle of March or April.”

Here is a transcript of Dean’s remarks: “The idea that we can afford to have a big fight at the convention and then win the race in the next eight weeks, I think, is not a good scenario. So, after the primaries are over, the last primary is June 8th in Puerto Rico - Puerto Rico I think, there may be another state with there - and after that if we don’t have a nominee, I think we will have a nominee sometime in the middle of March or April. But if we don’t, then we’re going to have to get the candidates together and make some kind of an arrangement. Because I don’t think we can afford to have a brokered convention, that would not be good news for either party.”

8. If the convention is deadlocked I see Gore accepting a draft.
Only in that scenario, though.

The odds of that happening before yesterday were 0.000001%.

Now the odds are maybe 0.001%.

Thus the DNC is not going to give in to a power play by either.

Too many of us would be gone, and they know it. They have been getting phone calls not to give in to the Hillary campaign.

18. Like I've Said: The Insiders Will Put Pressure On Obama To Withdraw Long Before The Convention.
That's the way it's gonna go down folks. It'll be an exciting few weeks of possibility for some around here, but in the end the pressure will be put on Obama and he will get behind Hillary.

24. put down your cracked and dirty crystal ball
although I think odds slightly favor Clinton, there's still a very decent chance that Obama can outright win this. In fact, I think his chance of doing so is better than hers. He's going to win LA, VA, MD, VT, DC, the Virgin Islands, WI and WA. There really isn't a whole lot of doubt about those states. He'll have the money the delegates the number of state wins, the popular vote going into March 4. If he captures either TX or OH, he stands a very good chance of being the nominee.

19.  The best arrangement is that whoever really won the most delegates in caucuses & primaries gets it
I think that this approach, once the voting and caucusing are done, should see the superdelegates coalescing around whichever of the two candidates has a CLEAR lead, if there is one, even if they don't have a majority. My own guess is that that would PROBABLY be Obama, but if his poll numbers are tanking as badly as Gallup suggests, maybe not.

I do NOT think drafting Gore, or a party insider preference (such as for Clinton) is the way to go, if it means denying the front-runner the nomination. Indeed, it is the only approach that could maintain unity in the Democratic Party.

But, let's stop and think about those special little swarms I've been noting on DU. What are they a barometer of? You don't have to be a weatherman to know which way the privileged horseshit aroma is blowing.

29. IMO ...
that is the only way it can happen ...

Neither Hillary or Obama are going to back down ...

I think Dean needs to take charge once all the primaries are over, and as you noted, whoever has the committed delegate lead HAS to be the candidate (Michigan and Florida no included)... He has to figure out how to then let the Florida and Michigan delegates into the conventon with the Super Delegates weighing in favor of the outright winner so that they don't swing the vote one way or another ...

23. He's absolutely right.
A brokered convention would be a disaster for the party. There could be a clear winner by Feb 19 or March 4 anyway, but a brokered convention is a dream for the Republicans.
