Obama on pace to raise $30 mil in Feb

By: Jeanne Cummings
Feb 6, 2008 05:41 PM EST

Barack Obama’s campaign is on track to raise another $30 million in February, sources close to the Illinois senator say, while Hillary Rodham Clinton’s spokesman revealed Wednesday that she had loaned her campaign $5 million.

Insiders in both campaigns say the growing financial disparity virtually ensures that Obama will be able to significantly outspend Clinton in the critical primaries to come.

Even before all the Super Tuesday votes were counted, Obama began airing advertisements in Nebraska, Virginia, the District of Columbia, Maryland and Maine — the next round of primary and caucus states — before Clinton did.

His campaign has raised $2.2 million in the past 24 hours, sources say.

“Obama’s financial superiority is straining the Clinton campaign at this point. That’s reflected in how he spread the field on her in Super Tuesday.

1. Hmmm..didn't Ghouliani do this in January...
Anyway, anytime a candidate needs to dip into their cheddar fund, it's never good.

25. Yes, lack of funds and support led him to ask his staffers to work for free too.

Didn't turn out for him very well.

2. so people believe in her so much
they are willing to work for free? excellent. they wouldn't do that unless they honestly thought something would come of it, you don't volunteer for someone you think will lose.

14. yup,. just like McCain's people
gonesville. never heard of the guy again.

again, these are all anonymous reports from publications that lean towards Obama (as does the entire media system right now) let's see the actual numbers before we panic or gloat, shall we?

and I hope Obama keeps raising money like mad, he's going to need about $200 million to take on McCain, minimum.

10. Hillary is prety much tied with Obama as far as delegates
Meaning that she has a shot. Why would they abandon her once she has money issues. They will go down with the ship (if the ship goes down). But it ain't over until it's over so why not stay? However, things need to change in the financial front or she is in trouble.

15. right, the whole point is
that we have absolutely no real idea of the money situation. have you seen documentation of Obama's record January? of course not, it's an estimate leaked to the press. it appears they have both spent about the same amount of money. Yes, Obama, as the candidate of the college educated and upwardly mobile, (check out the exit polls before you mock that) has more money to spend, the high rollers on both sides are tapped out, and a lot more people are out there to give him the max than her.

funny, isn't it? a month ago, having a lot of money meant you were the establishment candidate, now having less money means that.

4. With the amount of money we're talking about in both campaigns, isn't it
astounding to think all those millions might not be enough?

Man, is our system whack.

Campaign finance. Maybe after this campaign those who weren't for it will be frightened into changing their minds.

5. This vector bothers me...
The whole money issue worries me somewhat as an Obama supporter... Say she has a respectable pull in fund raising... then the Clinton camp will spin it as momentum and it counters an argument MSM and Surrogates but NOT Obama made winning the money race.

It has the potential to give here a win – come back kid – sort of moment with money instead of votes. Perhaps I am paranoid…

In any event… I hope everyone keeps up their good work.

22. Can she repay her loan from her General Election fund?
Considering that's about $20 million more that she can't touch right now, and this loan was obviously to the primary fund, can she repay herself from the General fund? If so, she can just loan to primary, repay from general, up to about $20 mill. Is there a precident on that?

them make up the $5 million the Clinton's loaned to themselves.
