9. I honestly think she thinks it makes her sound strong
She just sounds angry and out of control.

Someone posted the other day,
Tell Hillary she can't bellow like Ted Kennedy so she shouldn't try. When she does, she sounds like every man's worst nightmare woman. Hire the acoustics engineer from ZZ Top and let the amplifiers do the heavy lifting. You can still blast your message, but you sound strong and confident rather than shrill and angry.

I kept it as I thought it was spot on.

Will bring the troops home within 60 days, she says. Only candidate in this race, Republican or Democrat with a plan to cover every man, woman, and child.

(I'm glad she changed her mind on the withdrawal in 18 months.)

Funny, when this primary season started, she didn't want to make any commitments about withdrawing from Iraq. Now that she is in danger of losing the nomination, suddenly she's George McGovern? What a phony.

42. She's a horrible public speaker.
No matter what the speech is about or where it is at, it always follows the same formula:

1. Bring up a subject
2. Say about two sentences about the subject.
3. Say about two more sentences in an extremely loud voice bragging out each and every word with slight pauses in between.
4. Wait for applause
5. Move to the next subject
6. Say about two sentences about the subject.
etc.

She's bad at public speaking, really bad. She's like that character Will Ferrell used to do - the guy who had no control over his voice modulation. He would yell for no particular reason with no particular emphasis, unaware of how loud his voice was getting.

69. Speaking absolutely objectively here...
...I'm utterly baffled as to why her campaign has not had or hired someone to counteract the (in my mind, and in the mind of many others) the backslide in her public speaking of late. It's NOT that she's bad, it's that she's just sort of off, and seemingly overly-conscious of herself while speaking. She actually is a pretty good public speaker in general. In the oft-mentioned, oddly-rescheduled “Headliners and Legends” special on MSNBC you can see her in action years ago. She's zippy and sounds UN-canned—unlike now.

I studied public speaking/oratorical skills years ago and one of the things my teacher addressed in a big way was “staying true to yourself” in performance. You don't let another speaker get you off your game. What seems to have happened is that Hillary has allowed Obama's over-the-top skill level insofar as public speaking to affect her. Too often, she seems to have almost looked over her shoulder and futilely tried to cop bits of his rousing style, which doesn't work for her. His style, a classic seminary “thrust” (what my teacher called it back in the day) plays to the physical differences between men and women. More lung capacity and “boomier” voices in general for men, and thus a greater ability to project in large rooms. When women try to speak the same way, the oft-times built-in resonance that man have physiologically isn't there, so she may seem to be yelling a little bit. Hillary is an excellent speaker when she's off-the-cuff and in smaller environs. Her cut-down of Chris Matthews with the “Oh Chrissy” dig worked because she was being herself and dealing with him one on one. It was a nice shiv in his ribs, and well-deserved.

Obama's speechfying to crowds is so devastatingly good because it plays to the natural response of people in those crowd settings. Put a person at a rostrum and have people in seats before him and if he can “wave the sugar stick” (another public speaking term) he can get a crowd roaring—which he or she feeds off of, and it becomes a weird feedback loop. Call and response, rhythm and flow. (Think Ray Charles' “What'd I Say”) It's intimidating to see that over your shoulder as an opponent—especially if you're battling for the super-soundbite the next day. So maybe you step out of your comfort zone a little bit, and don't play “your” game. And it shows.

The perfect analogy is this. Imagine two hitters in baseball.

One's a slugger, a bomber who hits tape-measure shots that make the crowd go “ahhhhhhhh!” but on the whole, he's a .280 hitter. It's just that when he connects, it's an awe-inspiring thing.

The other's a spray hitter, peppering the field with singles and doubles all over the place. Not a heavy-hitter, but nonetheless a .315-.320 popper in the lineup.

The nature of sports is that the “home run” hitter gets more ink and more drooling adulation as the “homer” is more eye-catching and for lack of a better word, “glorious”.

The old baseball phrase was “Home run hitters drive Cadillacs”—alluding to other hitters driving lesser cars because they were paid less for not hitting as many bombs.

What the .310 hitter shouldn't do, because it almost NEVER works is to TRY to hit homers like the slugger. It's not in his nature and drives his average down. The .310 hitter should augment what he does. Play a speed game—steal bases, bunt more and so on to round out, enhance and give you more to look at in their game.

I don't know WHO is working with her on this (if anyone) but that adviser needs to change their game or be out on their ass in lieu of someone else who can get the best out of her. That ain't happenin' now.

72. ABSOLUTELY! What has happened to her.
Check out this appearance of Clinton on Letterman 8 years ago:

She's great. I don't get what's happened. She's lost a lot of that natural charm.

pointing out every wrinkle...I'll bet you will take the opportunity to do the same thing. Frankly I hadn't noticed, so I can't refute your sexist comment. How come no one talks about how much Botox and Collagen men use?

That wasn't a very kind comment but...it's par for the course for the poster.

And I DID comment on Kerry in '04 when HE used collagen, too, which he obviously did. Nothing sexist about it-just pointing it out.

116. I'm sorry I missed it
this "Hillary yelling", "nails on a chalkboard", etc. is getting really old. I think some people's ears are being influenced by the hate that they feel for her. Add in the use of the term "cackle" and it starts to take on (oh no, she's gonna say it) sexist overtones.

I don't need her to sound like a preacher to hear the words that she is saying. I spent 8 years in college listening to science professors "drone on" and I can hear their passion for their subject without chants or sounding like a televangelist. I listen to the actual content.
