Is this how severely our mass culture has deteriorated? Our presidential primaries appear to have transformed into an episode of American Idol, with millions glomming on to a candidate whose record they haven't studied. How many of these glassy-eyed groupies can discuss any of Obama's senate votes, articulate his plans for the US, or reconcile his rhetoric with his actions?
Choosing our next president is an extremely serious endeavor, all the moreso given the many threats to world peace and to the preservation of the planet. The idea that mass-scale emotional fervor can be a deciding factor in choosing the next leader during this crucial juncture is truly frightening.
