the American Idol Candidate |
|
Is this how severely our mass culture has deteriorated? Our presidential primaries appear to have transformed into an episode of American Idol, with millions glomming on to a candidate whose record they haven't studied. How many of these glassy-eyed groupies can discuss any of Obama's senate votes, articulate his plans for the US, or reconcile his rhetoric with his actions? Choosing our next president is an extremely serious endeavor, all the moreso given the many threats to world peace and to the preservation of the planet. The idea that mass-scale emotional fervor can be a deciding factor in choosing the next leader during this crucial juncture is truly frightening.

...what is that going to do? And how?
Explain.
How will it end poverty or the war in Iraq? How will it provide national security? How will it get back our civil rights? How will it fix the economy? How will it provide Universal Healthcare? How will it help Americans get and keep better jobs (or any jobs AT ALL?)

6. Our so-called democratic process is a joke ... if it weren't |
|
Al Gore would be the President, there'd be no war in Iraq, the economy would benefit those who contribute vs those who steal from those who contribute, we'd support the value of families vs family values, health care would not equate to filling the pockets of insurance and pharmaceutical companies, NCLB would never have made it to a vote and public education would be given the financial support and respect it deserves, and on and on.
But, we live in a celebrity/fame obsessed, wealth controlled, M$M manipulated society whose consumers (aka average Americans) continually allow themselves to be used and manipulated because, IMO, it's easier for them to scrape together two nickels than to actually stand up for themselves.

chosen candidate. I'm giving DUer's a lot of credit, but I'd like to think we're generally a better-informed lot than most.

Maybe you should too. You might like him better.
By the way, what's so great about Hillary's Senate record? What has she passed that's so wonderful besides voting for the Iraq War? She has lower AFL-CIO, LCV, and ACLU ratings than Obama.

And there is a group forming that is going to demand that all of the candidates start talking more about issues.
So hopefully we will see that soon.

28. Would you classify JFK's presidency in the same way? |
|
It is a well known fact that JFK's appearance in the first televised debate with Richard Nixon was a huge factor in his victory. And the early sixties were a far more threatening time, right in the middle of the cold war.

|
that Hillary's record and plans are perfect. Just saying Hillary is the shit doesn't make it so. If your candidate doesn't win it's because of her shortcomings, not ours.
