John McCain is in deeeeep shit.
Edited on Sat Feb-09-08 11:50 PM by WilliamPitt
1. He now has to run against the very party base he absolutely must have, at least partially, on board to have a prayer come November. The more he has to campaign against Huck, the more damage he does with the voters he needs to win;

2. Huck did well tonight for a variety of reasons, but the biggest one was that he got all of Mitt's voters. If this becomes a pattern, McCain has a long road ahead of him (see #1 above) and a lot of money to be spent;

3. His speech at the Conservative Political Action Committee went over like a fart in church, literally. The base listened to McCain last night, and handed him his nuts in a small brown sack tonight.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...good. :)

3. Someone here said he's a formidable opponent. If I had poll making abilities I'd make a poll:
Is McCain a formidable opponent to either candidate?

Option 1: No.

End. :)

So I agree completely. He's done. We will have a Democratic President.

18. Obama-or-Clinton v. Huck?
Massacre. Huck pulls 20-25% votes nationally in a general election, and not much more. He's the winger Goldwater. We could run a sandwich against him and pull 55%.

This smack down will continue until November and I don't think even Diebold can stop it. Sweet. It's about time. I'm going to enjoy this time because once we have a supermajority in both legislatures and in the WH, I fear we are going to see something that will break the hearts of most Democrats. That I don't look forward to, but the path toward that moment, will be sweet. There's a German word for it, that is on the tip of my tongue, but I just can't pull it out. Long word.

63. Turnip is my favorite discussion of the day
My poll would ask whether McCain can beat a turnip(D) and the answer would be a resounding no! Since our two candidates are both far smarter and more appealing than, say, a turnip, that man doesn't have a chance.

30. It can't be clarified
Because the rules about what choices the delegates have are set by individual states. Almost all states allow delegates to switch is a candidate withdraws, but Romney didn't withdraw. He suspended. And the presumed reason Romney suspended was to hang onto his delegates.

I'm not sure, but I don't think any state rules mandate a delegate to vote for another candidate based on a command from the candidate he was first assigned to. I don't see Romney being able to tell his delegates where else to go.

12. He doesn't really have to...
it's already obvious that there's a deep fracture in the GOP coalition of social and economic conservatives. The evangelical voters are the ones handing Huckabee these victories; he's not going to be the nominee, but so-called 'values voters' are less likely to vote for McCain, and may end up staying home in November faced with a choice between two candidates they don't like.

28. They'll give it to Huck, Brownback or Hunter for sure.
Just depends on the timing. If, for example, McCain hinted that Brownback and Hunter are being considrered for their VP pick, that'd outflank the Huck-VP pressure, and really give the GOP base something to argue about.

The press keeps hinting he wants Condi Rice.

I think he has to offer Huck the job. Brownback is also a good pick, but they want him to take the Kansas governors job when Sebelius' term ends in '10 (Brownback is out of the Senate due to term limits). You hear sniping on our side about what happens if the progresive wing doesn't come out for Hillary in the GE; it'd be about 10x worse for McCain if the evangelicals stay home.

31. We used to say "like a fart in a diver's helmet."
Considering that so many on their side may end up being "stuck" with a guy they really don't like, that version seems quite appropriate ... though I have no quibble with a fart in church, either. :)

I can't bear to watch much of McCain, period -- partly because he's so pathetic he almost draws my sympathy. But then I recall what most of my Namvet pals have said about him over the years, and it's easier to harden my heart.

I wonder if I'm the only one who thinks he doesn't look well at all? Both mentally and physically, I see some marked deterioration in the guy lately. And if he's failing this long before the really tough part of campaigning arrives....

Geez, I hope the Repugs don't pull a bait and switch on us all at the last minute or something. I have no doubt they've got plenty of nasty tricks stockpiled to deal out in the months to come.

39. This is the most interesting race, and in so many ways.
1. We laugh in our house about being able to witness McCain riding a tightrope on a rickety unicycle while juggling chainsaws, crocodiles and poo flinging chimps taunting from below. either of our candidates will be able to mindfuck the rebubs more than any election I can think of.

2. The huckster is at a moral crossroads. He clearly is enjoying his unlikely (to some) success and fame, while party poobahs in the neocon branch are trying to get him to lay off. This puts them in the role of the Whispering Tempters, and therefore escalating his situation into a biblical challenge. So what would be a question of ego is transformed into heroic status. The Huckster is gonna be prayin' hard on that. Is he Daniel? Paul? ???

3.Literally? Damn, sorry I missed that. ;)

48. Listening to a little bit of wingnut talk-radio on the way home tonight
from Chicago - Mike McConnell was the host's name. I've never heard of him at all, and consider myself relatively savvy regarding political talk radio personalities (mostly through Stephanie Miller's "right-wing world", part of her daily broadcast).

Anyway, McConnell was calling himself a conservative with libertarian leanings, but was really doing the hard sell in favor of McCain to his listeners. Problem was, his listeners just were not buying!! Of course, you had your usual Ron Paul supporters calling and asking the host why he wasn't supporting the REAL conservative, but nearly everyone else was referring to McCain's "desire for open borders", his campaign finance reform work, opposition to Bush's tax cuts, etc. etc. Bottom line...this guy just will not bring out the base on election day!!!

It's ripe with comic relief. McCain could put God on as his running mate and he will still lose, at least this way, we have an extra crazy religious whackadoo to mock. 56. Please. Republicans vote, and they will vote for McCain in force.
Dems don't vote, for some reason.

McCain will win easily, and both houses of congress will go GOP.

Sorry. I wanted Edwards.

70. Dems will vote this year in the biggest numbers ever
and Republicans are very demoralized. Most will still vote but a few may cross lines and some will just lie to their friends about who they voted for or even whether they voted. They couldn't even muster any energy for their primaries and primary caucuses.

71. I've heard that Lexapro is the best of the best
I mean really dude, you are deranged, not thinking straight. Depressed.

I wanted Edwards too, in the worst way. But it's another day and we aren't going to lose, period. It just ain't gonna happen. Sorry to burst your unhappy bubble, but there ya go.

57. A man who came into my office the other day said that he didn't like McCain.
He said he really liked Huckabee and I cringed! I told him I thought the man was a bit wacky! He did listen to me though as I told him why I felt that way. I was hoping that when he left he was thinking about it.

60. McCain is the nominee. Huck cannot win. But yes, he's in trouble for the G.E. So NO HRC...
that is the ONLY thing that will bring the GOP base out en masse to vote....to keep the Clintons out of the White House.

If they don't have that, they will STAY HOME en masse, and the Democratic candidate will win.

61. McCain will once again sell his soul to the devil and the whackadoo
Huckabee will be his running mate. Not that it will matter. He could resurrect Lincoln as his running mate but if Lincoln has an (R) after his name, they will lose. Molly Ivins, God rest her magnificent soul, was right. The electorate will not soon elect another Republican to higher office. Not any higher than dogcatcher and even then...........................................................

I'm pretty pissed at the behavior of those on our side but I'm willing to put that aside for a few minutes of gloating at the expense of the guys on the other side of the aisle. They suck and they heartily deserve the big flying bird. Stupid, dumbfucks should never have put their faith in a group of neocons and shysters. If one sleeps with dogs, one will inevitably get fleas. Republicans are rotten with flea bites, flea larvae and just plain disgusing lice like creatures. And I'm not feeling much like reaching across the aisle to offer up some flea spray. They slept with them, they can have them. Let them go to the free speech zones and scratch their damn flea bites all they want. They can pray to God in all sorts of tongues for salvation and they can even bring Jesus Christ on a Trailer Hitch, if'n they want to. But what they cannot do anymore, is pretend to be the adults. They never were and the lie is all over them now.

If McCain is smart, and that no longer seems to be the case, if it ever was, he'll just call off his side of the race. He could be challenging a turnip with a (D) after it's name, and come January, we will be inaugurating Mr. or Madame Turnip as our new president. He's going to be running against one of two people who are many rungs up from a turnip. He's, politically speaking, a dead man walking. If he decides to be a dead man walking and spewing lots of Republican cash, so much the better.

I was at the Washington caucus today. Don't worry, my comments won't deter a single voter this fall. We all know it's a done deal but we want to have a part in the massive, and I do mean massive slap down that's coming. The Republicans are owed for their obscene behavior these last seven years and the election will be just one of the first slap downs. Won't be the last. I hope we remember to do some governing while we're busy doing the slap down. We likely will, since that's the part we're actually good at, unlike the Republicans who can't seem to govern their way out of a paper sack, but boy could they campaign, until this year, that is. That chicken is fully rotten and that bird dog won't ever kill another chicken (I hope).

72. he sure is!!
I wouldn't be surprised if all the fundies decide to split away from the GOP and run Huckabee as their own candidate.
