CRETE — In a rural county where kolaches are as big a tradition as voting Democrat, Barack Obama barely edged Hillary Clinton in Saturday's caucus.

Opinions seemed equally divided among Saline County caucusgoers about how the event went.

"You don't have even 10 percent of the county's registered Democrats here," said Daniel Worta of Wilber, as party officials at the Saline County Fairgrounds event counted the bright pink index cards that served as ballots.

But county party chairman Don Eret of Dorchester told Worta that holding their first-ever caucuses was the only way Nebraska Democrats could have a say in the party's presidential nominating contest.

"The name of the game is to get into the action early," Eret said, and the primary election couldn't be moved from its traditional May date.

After supporters of both candidates gave speeches to sway 30 uncommitted voters, the final tally was Obama 149, Clinton 144 and three uncommitted.
