1. Wow. Jimmy Carter Didn't Take Georgia
Or much of the South at all.

Maybe there's a meme that can be put to bed.

4. It's important how the South played a role in BOTH Carter and Clinton's getting elected
This is one of the points central to Edwards' presidential campaigns (neither of which I supported, though the arguments, as you can see, are hardly out of thin air)

5. The colors used to flip every election.
Election #1: blue = dems.

Election #2: blue = repubs.

Election #3, 5, 7 ... as #1; Election #4, 6, 8 as #2.

Then we got stuck red = repubs, blue = dems. I've heard there's discussion of really messing up American political discourse by having the networks reverse the colors this fall, so blue = repubs and red = dems, adding a bit of flexibility.

6. I suggest you read "Master of the Senate: The Life and Times of Lyndon Johnson"
Also "Party of the People" by Jules Witcover

http://www.amazon.com/Party-People-Democrats-Jules-Witcover/dp/0375507426

http://www.amazon.com/Master-Senate-Lyndon-Johnson-Vintage/dp/0394720954/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202686569&sr=1-1

You can buy them for a combined $30. These are invaluable reads about the history of the Democratic party and the history of the country.
